Laptop for School, Please Help.

Hi! I'm trying to find a laptop to use for college. I know pretty much nothing about computers, which will become apparent very soon, haha.

For the last four years I've been using an Acer Travelmate 6000 (it was a requirement of my school). It doesn't have very much space which has been a big problem for me, and I had A LOT of problems with it over the years. However, I really like the size and appearance.

I just bought a Lenovo Ideapad Y150, but I just can't make myself like it. I'm just not a fan of widescreens, and the resolution seems so small. There's also something about it that I just... don't like. I know that sounds stupid.

So basically what I'm desperately looking for are suggestions on what I should look into. I need to use it for schoolwork, digital art, and I also watch a lot of shows and listen to music, as well as save a LOT of pictures. Also, I don't want a widescreen, which narrows down the selection a lot, it seems.

As for price, I can't really spend anything above $1,700.

Thank you for any help, I'm really clueless about this.

Thanks for your help. :)

Here are some that I've found, maybe someone could give me their insights on them?

Dell Latitude D830

ASUS M50 Series M50m-B1

HP Compaq 8710p

You'll have to shop around if you want a particular resolution - if you change the resolution, it's going to look of poor quality, especially for video (incl. games), text processing and graphic design. Generally speaking, widescreens are cheaper than laptops with a small screen (why, I don't know)...

Have you considered a Lenovo ThinkPad? I'd stay away from the IdeaPad (it's not going to have the same features and construction as the ThinkPad) - the problem is, if you are a performance user, most Thinkpads come with only 1GB of RAM. Also, Thinkpads are not for gaming, so you'll probably want to look into something else.

The T61p has a graphics card that equals the 8600, it is very cheap to upgrade the ram, and for $1700 you can get a GREAT config on a thinkpad..

MacBook is pretty nice.

Also dedicated graphics wont do much better than a normal x3100 if you are just doing photoshop and 2d work. The x3100 will pretty much do some 3d but a bit of a lag how ever the macbook will take pretty more advantage.

You love your mac, however it is out of the budget...

Thanks for the suggestions. Right now I'm looking into the T61. I don't do much gaming, so that's not a huge concern for me.

I wouldn't mind a Macbook, the screen size worries me a bit but maybe I can get to an Apple store this week to see one in person.

I think you have many choice under $1700 and not widescreens. I know HP is good for you to choose.

Thanks for everyone's input. Although I'm not a fan of wide screens, I have decided to get an HP Pavilion dv5z. I didn't have enough time to order online, so I had to choose from what was sold near me. I'm happy with this decision, though.

(And to make this experience even nicer, I ended up not getting charged a restocking fee when I returned the Lenovo, like I was expecting...)
