8600GT - How will it perform with my setup?

I formerly had plans to replace the 8600GT in my pre-built (couldn't resist, I was getting a 720GB HDD, 4gb ram, quad core qx6700 + 64-bit Vista for $600) with a 8800GT, but the power source was only 350W and the minumum requirements for a 8800GT is 450W so no. People have been telling me to replace the PSU, but it's not worth it because with the added 8800GT I'm already $200 over budget :P

So I'm sticking with the 8600GT that came with it so exactly how will it perform? (please also say what settings it will run it at) Any popular games, Crysis, etc, but I'm specifically wondering how it will perform with the games GRID, NFS Prostreet, CS: Source, COD4 + Crysis.

Well Crysis can be played on high @ 800x600

Cod4 can be played at medium settings @ 1024x768

CS:S Max settings

I know you didnt include this but, but BF2 can run max.

As for the rest of the games i really don't know, haven't played them before.
But if I were you, i'd get a new psu + a 8800gt, your games will be far more smoother

The 8600gt is just alittle better than the 7600gt, which I have alot of experience with. It might help to list the resolution you're going to be running at.

I ran CoD4 close to high @ 1280 x 1024, with frames that sometimes dipped too low for comfort. (just to let you know, I judge 30 as ok; 20 and below TLFC) Medium should run pretty good under the 8600gt.

Crysis. :P most settings at Medium, the same rez, delivered alright FPS, lowering a couple settings was even better for the FPS. Forget AA/AF for either game.

It will run TF2 maxed (with AF and 4x MSAA) and rarely dip below 20 FPS.

its craptacular a best, if you can get 250 dollars get an 8800 ultra to blow its brains out in performance, if you go the el cheapo power supply, if that thing takes a crap and takes everything else with it, you will not get anything back from the original manufacturer

LOL What a useless post. He doesn't want a new card, the 8800Ultra is old, hot and power inefficient and if you buy one (now or then) you need your head looked at.

Screen Resolution: 1680 x 1050

What games do I want to play? Ionno, anything really =p

Definately go for the 8800GT and new PSU with that intended resolution, otherwise you will be playing in PowerPoint slideshow mode. :P

The best way to determine what you can play with whichever GPU is installed is via here:http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

Alternatively you could download 3DMark06 and run it as DirectX 10 is not a strong point for the 8600 (moreso at your resolution).

But just consider this, you can overclock a 8800GT to speeds that rival the Ultra (18 months ago the fastest card on the planet), AND nVidia has just released a free upgrade function of calculating PhysX on all 8 + series gpus. This means that via the latest driver, CUDA enabled chips such as the 8800GT (and for that matter the 8600) your graphics card will computer physics calculations in games that are patched/developed for PhysX. This will become the norm though, and the performance increases will be huge (I got a 30% improvement in 3DMark Vantage already).

It has a G92 chip that is very energy efficient so you don't need a massive PSU (450 - 500W is ideal - Corsairs 450W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003 for $60), plus a 8800GT such as the excellent (i have one) BFG Tech GeForce 8800 GT 512MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143118 for $150. OR you could go for a 9600GT which is about $100 and freaking awesome!

If you can afford it, in 6 months you will be happier. PS (not being rude), but if you can send/sell the qx6700, do it, its performance/price is rubbish, so get some cash there and get a Q6600 or E8400 instead.

good luck man

Thats true, but the CPU is never going to be the bottleneck with that RAM and Mobo - but the gpu is. The next purcahse will need to be a gpu.

Well, you shouldn't be concerned about finding out how your setup will perform, cause according to bigfella, "A toaster can play COD4 maxed".

You know what i mean, COD4 is hardly pushing graphics at 1400 x 900 (an ATi 2400pro can play it like that), however i would like to see your FPS at the other resolutions with everything maxed. Actually i don't really care.

COD4 is very scalable, however SLI is not a good option here, so its a mute point anyway.

****UPDATE****

I'm thinking about either the 8800GT or 9800GT. Same Price?? I've decided to go future-proof and buy something nicer. Local computer shop is willing to replace PSU and change video card for me.

This 9800GT: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=31998&vpn=512-P3-N975-AR&manufacture=eVGA

$139.99
or

This 8800GT:http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27704&vpn=512-P3-N801-AR&manufacture=eVGA

$139.99 (The link says it is more expensive but it has a instant rebate of $60)

Guy is recommending me this power supply:

$60

That is a good idea, but that link to the PSU doesn't give details, so whatever PSU you have chosen, make sure its at least as good as the Corsair i linked to earlier.
