So after some research I decided on the 4850...

if you want to spend a little more I would suggest an Nvidia 9800GTX+
It's only marginally better, and AFAIK quite a bit more pricey (though I don't know it the prices have come down), IDT it's worth going to 9800GTX+. You may want to do some research, though, but I'd just grab the 4850.

I found some sites that said it pretty much doubled the 3dmark06 scores from my 1900xtx so I would say it was a worthy upgrade...

Although I heard the 4870 is almost triple, oh well...

i'm pretty sure 4850 is better than 9800GTX+

not according to all the benchmark results and other statistics.

I think the people who prefer the 4850 just prefer ATI over NVidia. I have yet to see a reason to prefer the 4850 (other than having a 20-30 dollar cheaper price)

Near-identical performance for 20-30 dollars cheaper? IMO that's pretty good reason to prefer a 4850 over a 9800GTX+. There can't be many other reasons in existence...

I got my 4850 for 169.99 on sale on newegg a few days ago, can't install yet, waiting in Guam for a few days than I get to go home and play games and monkey on the puter!

If you can shell out another $100.00 than get the 4870. Other wise 9800 GTX+ or 4850 are good choices as well.

the 4850 i got is awesome. i overclocked it to 700mhz because thats the maximum that the ATI drivers allow. not sure if rivatuner will let me go any further, but i dont have any lag even at default clockspeeds so im going to leave it where it is.

oh and the fan runs really slow, probably less than 20% its max speed.. so you need to download this

the 9800GTX+ performs better than the 4850. Now we can debate whether the additional performance is worth the extra 20-30 bucks. as for a 4870 being 30 more than a 9800GTX+, that is not true unless you compare the most expensive 9800GTX+ to the cheapest 4870. 9800GTX+'s are going for 200ish, the 4850's around 170ish, and the cheapest 4870's I can find are around 270ish.

If you want to bring the 4870 into the picture it has to go up against the GTX260 which is similarly priced. But that is a whole different thread.

ATI > NVidia... its that simple.

the problem with nvidia is that they overclock and pack a ton of performance into their processors, but overall ATI makes them more compatible with the software, and they design them to last longer and to anticipate future graphics requirements.

im just pissed cause my old 7800gt wouldnt support AA and HDR at the same time lol, im very satisfied with my HD 4850 though.

The hd4870 destroys everything I've seen thus far.

I don't even need 2 of them but I get the benefits of my work--at home.

AtI--owns nvidia..

end of thread...lol

I just ran 3dmark06 and got 11886 without any OC straight out the box. Time to tweak and add the HSF!

Great card, huge improvement from x1900xtx.
