How to replace the CPU

I am just getting my feet wet, and wonder if someone can tell me how to replace a CPU.
I am assuming that the thermal paste holds to heatsink/fan to the CORE, so how do you remove both? Can the cooler be reused?

Thanks,

AMD or Intel?

Take of the CPU fan
unlock the CPU,take out the CPU
put the new CPU in apply thermal past
put fan back on.

INTEL processor.

I thought that the thermal paste was a type of glue. Is that incorrect? Is it only a heat-transfer medium?

Intel, i'm not formilur with....

Thermal paste is a heat transfer.... and transfer the heat through to the fan heatsink.

you also have to line the chip up in a certain way, usually the chip will have a small triangle in the corner of it, you must put that triangle towards the lever

or make sure the triangle is in the same corner as the one on the CPU socket.

Just a side note regarding thermal paste. There are some that are glues, and overtime, even non-adhesive ones can become quite sticky. I have an old P4 in my closet I can't get the heatsink off of! I'm afraid something will break if I try much harder!

Run it flat out for 10 minutes to heat up the paste, and then it will come off.
