thinking about liquid cooling

I finally got my 9800GX2, and now I want to OC my CPU. I'm currently looking at these two thermaltake ones, and see not much of a difference except the more expensive one has a faster fan rpm on the radiator.

I currently have a Q6600 and want to push it to 3ghz. So if someone could tell me whether either of those would cool it well enough or not, and tell me why the more expensive one would be worth the extra money would be great.

I'm anti liquid-cool...but thats just me..

I really believe if you find yourself a good cpu cooler you will be better off. In your wallet especially.

I can definately recommend the OCZ Vendetta2 cpu cooler...perhaps you wanna spend the extra money on another upgrade..maybe more ram, a blue ray drive, ..etc

I have another question about liquid cooling. Say I want to add it to my graphics card, I know I need a water block, but do I need to get a different system then the ones above to have more than one set of tubing, or could I buy a VGA waterblock and the tubes I need and hook them up?

Also, I was planning on getting one of thermaltake's Armor cases which would be around $200. Instead of spending $200 on a case and $200 on a liquid cooling system, should I just buy a thermaltake Sword?

I will get the cheaper of these two, but can someone tell me what the difference is?

I'm telling you bud, buy yourself a great chassis with proper fan cooling and you will save time, effort, money, and get awesome results.

Best of luck--either way you will have yourself a fun rig...just tryin to show people that water-cooling is unecessary with proper case cooling.
 
You can easily reach 3ghz on air cooling for the Q6600 G0. I'd be surprised if you even have to up your vcore. Seriously, unless you're doing this for fun, save yourself some trouble and pick up a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (if you want the best of the best), or a Tuniq 120.
 
does anyone here use watercooling with faster 24/7 speeds than what air cooling can do? the Thermalright Ulra120 Extreme does a pretty good job at aircooling, and I'm not sure if it's worth 200+ to watercool. What do you guys think?
 
water cooling is for enthusiasts. if you dont like you use your computer a whole lot, and you like to spend a lot of time working on the inside of it then water cooling is right for you lol.

I consider myself an enthusiast of a lot of things, getting the most out of my computers one of them. I just can't justify water cooling unless I could, for instance, run my E8400 5 GHz (or even close) 24/7 stable. Is it possible?

I doubt it...at least in the long run. You'd have to jack the Vcore up so high that it'd probably fry your CPU if you leave it on 24/7 for extended periods. I think someone OCed it to 5.4ghz w/ 1.86v vcore using dry ice as cooling (or something like that).
 
Well I've checked in the BIOS and my CPU runs at 30C, but that's about as idle as you can get. So I guess I could just use my current heatsink.

I need to run a stress test first though. How long should I run it for?
 
I'm not sure why everyone is against water cooling it's the best results you can get. I've installed a water cool system a few times in my friends pc. I think they get a bad rep because people think they're gonna leak all over your system. If you've ever set one up you know it's hard to get a leak, even if you try to intentionally.

I recommend Asetek Waterchill system. There's great reviews and even some on YouTube so you can see it.

I'm not against it...I just don't see the point in it unless you're going for an extremely high OC. I mean, it can cost $200+ for a good system, and with that you money you can buy a better CPU.
 
its true, water cooling does take a whole lot more heat away from your cpu, and it generally allows for a better overclock... but in my opinion its really not worth it just because of the work, time, and money you need to put into it. i'd rather just screw down a big typhoon for $45. keeps my cpu cool. personally, i overclock to save money.. and i do it as well as i can with air cooling. i'm a student in college, and i work 60hours a week during the summer. i just dont have time on top of all that (and partying lol) to deal with liquid cooling. i can see myself doing it after i get out of college and start making some more money working less hours though... that is if i dont just decide to save for a vapochill system, it seems like the results are a LOT better performance per dollar.

of course, there are other ways to drop temperatures than just getting a different type of cooling system.
i.e. lapping mods, extremely thin layers of arctic silver (microscopically thin), a faster fan, or adding ramsinks to your cpu heatsink. i even know of an online guide just to modding a thermaltake big typhoon from hanging it to the top of your case so it gets an even set on your cpu to putting some styrofoam where there arent any aluminum fins to keep the air flowing through them instead of away from the fins.

It's not worth it, I have a water cooling setup now as I also did in my previous rig, for me I can get about 200-300MHz higher on water then I could with air, but it's not worth the price difference. I mainly do it because it's something cool to do, makes it look better, and gives you better bragging rights.

I mean why do you buy things for your car like aftermarket wheels or dash kits? They don't make the car go faster, they are just there for looks and bragging rights.
 
i have the 120 extreme and it does a great job on my qx9650. i got it to 3.8ghz without a noticeable change in temp. i'm starting to research different water cooling options, not because i need it, but because i just want to try it. i'm liking the 8800gtx cooler that koolance has, be sure to check that out.

Just goes to show how much of a waste it is to get the extreme version. You got your QX9650 to 3.8GHz on water, and I got a Q9550 to 4.0GHz on water, lol.
