How private can a home network be?

Whoops

I rent a room and I use the internet that’s connected to my computer from a cord that is in the wall. How private is my web browsing?

Well it's private, unless anyone connects to your modem... your fine.

If it wireless, that is a different story.

So barring anyone connectng to my modem with a cord, using just a straight-up network cable that's connected to the landlord's home network won't enable him to look at my web browsing? What about any of my files, I have Xp with Service Pack 2.

It all depends on what files you have shared.....

I recommend having a password on your user account.

You can put a firewall on your computer like Zone Alarm and then you can stop things coming in and accessing your PC.

What version of XP do you have?? Eg - Home, Pro???

I've got the Home version, already have a password, and I have nothing in shared folders, just folders in My Documents and folders on the desktop.

OK, well then i would recommend is a firewall and then you will have nothing to worry about.

just to clarify, wireless is hightly secure IF you use WPA2, if you use that with non-dicinary passcode, it is close to as secure as being connected to LAN

It sounds like everyone in your building/apartment shares a connection, if that's the case then anyone who is connected to the LAN could potentially gain access to your computer, just make sure to have your computer locked down.

Yah, get a hold of a free firewall (I'd suggest ZoneAlarm)

And hope to hell there aren't any HACKER ON STERIODS.
