I am only asking if it's legal. Not asking for help on/how to do it, but heres my situation. My copy of vista home that came with my laptop has vanished but I still have my genuine vista sticker with the CD key on the bottom. So! would it be okay for me to torrent an ISO of the CD then use my own legit cd key?

Cheers!

If you read through the EULA carefully, it says you can't do it, but everyone is doing it and it works, and I can't see how it would be unethical since you have a legit code which technically means that you're a legal owner of the product, just make sure you torrent a copy that's not been tinkered with.

I'm no expert at this, but as far as I know...
Your CD Key gives you legal rights to that particular OEM Version of Vista Home on THAT laptop. The CD that you use to install it should not play a role. You should even be able to get a disk from Microsoft to avoid any problems with a torrent version of Vista that could be infected with something.

And now a slight change of topic for further thought.
Here is a question for people here in the forum. If his laptop were to die, can he call Microsoft and get permission to install that key on another computer that belongs to him? My understanding is that you can only do that with retail versions and not with OEM versions. Basically an OEM version is meant to die with the hardware it came with. Or can you change the MOBO and other stuff and still be able to activate it again?

Depends on what kind of OEM copy. If you have a OEM that came with a HP/Dell/Sony so on. No your not suppost to, I,m not saying its impossible. If its a System builders OEM that you got from like Newegg its alot easier, depends alot on what you tell them when you call to activate it.
