E8400 or not?

Hey guys

Wanted to get your opinion. An E8400 (Aus $200 mark) or is there something better for that price? I am willing to go to $250.

go for a quad, core 2 duos are outdated,yeah i know its an e8400 were talking about here but soon games will need quads and you will need to upgrade yet again.

i cant point you to another processor because i have no clue what pc sites there are for aus people.

i only know newegg for us and soon can,and ebuyer for uk people. :o
 
In my opinion, by the time games really require quad cores, the current quad cores will be outdated and the i7's will be out and everyone will be upgrading to those. Then again I'm a proud E8400 owner so my opinion could be considered biased :P

What i am getting at, is in real world use, what is the BEST CPU in this price range.

The E8400 is a great CPU, and the i7's are a different socket, so without a motherboard upgarde....

I am sticking to LGA775 for now, whats the best i can buy say for $200US?
 
for au$200 Definately the E8400, where I buy my components, that's definitely the best for that price range (and yes I'm including quad cores in that statement)
 
Oh, you did say US200 didn't you. My bad, for some reason I thought you said AU because E8400s are around 200 here as well. Not sure what your best option is then, you might be able to find a good quad core in your price range, but I'm not sure.

Edit: Oh, you say Aus 2200 at the top and US200 later, that's where I messed up :P

.....get a duo2 and forget the current waste of the quad...95% of people with a quad dont need it/use it.
 
where a game is patched to take advantage of multithreading, the more cores the better. Crysis uses one core for physics, one core for textures and sound and another for the rest. Mulitple cores is an advantage, i was simply agreeing that some games can take advantage of the extra processing. sheesh.

Anyway i understand core technology, that is not what this thread is about, its about what is the best CPU for the money, games or otherwise.
 
im not sure of your point there funky? say again. I mean this nicely, just not sure what you mean..

It really depends, if you want balls to the wall gaming, go for the E8400! If you want decent (saying that, the Q6600 won't have a problem with any game out now!) gaming, and the ability to multi task better and / or use resource hungry programs, go with the Q6600.

I asked myself this a few weeks back, I went for the Quad. In fact, it wasn't really much of a decision. I went for the Q6600 for many reasons;

You can OC it to around 3.4Ghz on air, which is more than plenty!
I do a fair bit of graphic design and 3D Rendering, so it benefits me more there.
When more games start to use multi-threading, I'll be set.

It's really down to what you want from your computer.
