why some much power for the average user?

Why are computer people buy now so powerfull? I figure the average end user isnt really going to need a core2duo and 2gigs DDR2 but that is the moderate computer you can by from a box store now.

I know Vista requires alot and i have no clue why.

I gues what the average user does not is not so average compared to 5 years ago. Multi media is very popular now and computer "gaming" is becomre more ubiqutious as well. But honestly most people are just doing web based activities then some word/excel on the side. does that really need multi cores?

I am all for massive storage. I believe nothing need to be delete to make room. Every picture, video, doc can be saved, backed up, version controlled practily now. a 500gb harddrive is under $100 dollars. in the next year a 1Tb drive will be ~$60.

over all it blows me away to massive amount of computing power we have and most the time its wasted on empty cycles. :rolleyes:
 
Thats the way we are, we want the best whether its of any use or not

Some want the fastest car yet in the UK we have'nt enough roads to go around.
Some want the flashiest car to be better than the neighbours.
Some want an all singing and dancing phone, I just want to make and receive calls.

Its consumer driven, the manufacturers know there is a market and they know we will buy the latest technology. If people want to keep up with technology and have the money to do it, good for them but I'm content with mid range processors but like lots of storage.
 
So essentially you want a really slow computer with old parts cause you dont do anything fast but you also need massive storage cause you don't believe in deleting...

Wow...your going to have a rocket of a computer with those criteria...

that's how it is here in my country. People actually buy better cars than each other or the shiniest of rims !!

Not just where you are...

they are everywhere...and if not ...

they will be coming to a neighborhood near you...soon,.. bringing the madd tyte hottness of their madd sik ride.

I would much rather stare out the window from the comfort of my nice 3 floor condo, in direct line of the warming glow from my 50: screen, sipping good beer in a oversized leather chair.... at my plain jane truck and know its way better than big rims on a flashy car.

I guess growing up does that to you...

although you do have a very valid point, i don't think its necessarily true when it comes to why (most) enthusiasts want to have the latest and greatest. i don't show my PC off to the neighbors.... in fact, i don't think any of my friends know how nice of a PC it is when compared to the average rig. i think most of us on here do it because we are into it, it interests us, and we want to be on the up and up with the latest technology because it is pertinent to modern society. long story short, most expensive things people buy are all for show, but i don't think PCs are one of them.
 
It feels good to know you have a good computer that can do whatever you probably won't do.
 
Im like the Scooter deli ma. i backup and dont delete much. Im afraid i might need it. then again i backup often somewhere else because im afraid i might loose it. on the other hand im trying to alway get rid of the duplicates on the other backup so everything else is the same.

did that make since?
 
Yeah as a computer enthusiast i love having better and new stuff.

But thats not diroga's point.

Like take me for example, right now I dont have have any games installed.
And the most I use my computer for is running iTunes, Chrome and Messenger.
So for me to have a quad core cpu is absolutely pointless. I only got mine because i have an interest in computers and love the idea of having a quad core haha.

He isnt necessarily saying that everyone who doesnt do much on their computers should have crap systems.
But I mean if your only ever gonna do word processing and a little bit of surfing, you dont need a dual/quad core pc and heaps of ram that is in pretty much every pre-built system these days. You could probably swap your average home users core2duo/2Gb ram system for a pentium 4 3Ghz/1Gb ram and they wouldnt notice a difference. Obviously Vista does use a fair bit, however most average people dont exactly notice.
Like when i was using my dads computer vista seemed totally fine. Then i got a new cpu for ram for mine and vista seemed exactly the same, but then i tried my dads again and it was heaps slow haha. He would never say anything about it being slow because he doesnt even realise :)

Most people on here have an interest in computers and so would want nice parts even if they dont fully use them, such as myself who could cope with a Celeron 2Ghz single core as opposed to my Q6600.

I wonder that too... why so much power to the average user?? I still have an old P4 3.06GHz 1.5GB RAM and ATI Radeon 9550 256 MB video card. And i'm not an average user, I know much more about computers than this 'average user'.

And the question does not limit to PC specs, but see Vista? It was made for the 'average user', and what attracts the average user more than eye candy?

On topic: Watch, in a couple years there will be quad core smartphones.
 
The reason why even cheap computers have dual-core CPUs:

Companies are constantly thinking of new ways to make things more efficient and cheaper. A C2D is no harder to make than a P4 for Intel so they just make the C2D because it is better. Intel created the LGA 75 socket so they could put the process of adding pins in the hands of the motherboard makers, thus simplifying the process of making their CPUs. Remember the perpendicular recording technique that allowed for drives bigger than 500GB? Well that made the process of making drives more efficient. It's all in marketing and the ability of the manufacturer. They want to keep things in a certain price range. For example: a $100 CPU now will not be $100 a year from now so they make a better CPU and price it at $100, when the older CPU gets too cheap to be efficient to make, they cut it off the line, making room for newer and better things.

A $400 PC now with a C2D in it is just standard because it is cheap to make.

Also, competition drives the manufacturers to make better and better things. If Intel just stuck with the P1, then AMD would have just made a better CPU and no one would use Intel.

Also, Computer enthusiasts are not "average users", we do a lot more and require a lot more.
