Hey Folks,

I've got a new house and shall be moving when all the works done, The Electricians coming tomorrow to start Rewiring the Electrics.

this is the best possible time to look into my internet connections around the house. So the question is, What would be the best way to supply my computers with the Internet while getting this work done?

At the moment I've got one main computer in the bedroom with the Router and CAT5 Ethernet cables running through the house.

When getting quotes from Electricians, One guy said he was going to put "Coms" in each room and wire for Sky Mutiroom!, I got another quote from sombody else which was 1/3 of the price so I'm going with him but he doesn't know what I'm talking about to get Coms in each room.

Thanks Folks,

you can get one cable with all and a lot easier. cat5, coax, telephone and fiberoptic. at least it will be at the wall. just put a blank on the wall until your ready to use it.

My dad it himself when we build the house, he put CAT5 ports in the wall and the cables all went into the switch, it works nicely.

Just get it done like that, and then from the wall, i have a CAT5 cable from the outlet on the wall to my PC.

Yea mate thats exactly the thing I was thinking about, Whats the switch? the main room? ... If I've got my main computer and router in the bedroom, How do I feed the other rooms with the Connection using the Wall Sockets? Also where do you get the CAT5 Ports for the wall? And is that All I need to buy for the Electrician to put it in, CAT5 Cables and CAT5 Wall Ports?..

Is it like this?

Well when dad did our house, he had a port in every room of the house, and then in the main study, he had another cat 5 port, and then just a cat 5 patch cable and put it into our switch, and it works fine.

That link - not quite like what my dad has set up, but, i'll take some pictures and then upload them today and post them here for you to have a look.

Thanks,

Sorry though I'm still quite confussed, Really need to order stuff this weekend but because there isn't many places in my town I need to do it online and it's harder online as I'm not sure what I'm getting.

I've got the 3 threes up the stairs ready, The holes have been cut in the wall for the Modular Wall Plate to be put into, the floorboards are up ready to run wires, but I'm not sure what I need, Plates, Connectors, Wires etc?

Hope you can help,

Thanks,

It sounds like you need:
a box of Cat5 (here it's 1000 feet)
some RJ45 plugs
some modular plates
I assume in Scotland they use the same coax cable for TV that we use in the US so you will need some RG59
some coax plugs for the modular plates
RG59 cable ends

Any electronics store in town or a home improvement store such as Home Depot (if they are in Scotland) should stock these items as they are pretty basic.

It's a basic project that you could do yourself if you wanted to.

Also, Cat5 is cheap so since you have had to open the floor, run some extra wire in case you want to add more in the future or you have a bad piece of wire. Cat5 is also the standard cable for telephone so you may want an extra line to a room while you are pulling wire.
