External hard drive

That's a rather new brand name in drives and basically unknown for most. The two leading for external still seem to be the same as you would expect for internal drives as well being WD and Seagate. An unknown or unfamiliar brand like that would be trial and error on the obvious hit or miss at your own risk there.
 
Did you use a name brand drive or some unknown when bying the enclosure? There's a good number of new brand names appearing since the external drives started to be stocked on store shelves.

The one thing to note about external drives however is they tend to run much warmer then your average drive installed inside case. While the enclosures see vent slots that doesn't guarantee real good air flow while a case usually sees intake as well as the rear exhaust fan.

I got a Ritmo IDE 2.5" case and the bought a 160GB 2.5" IDE WD drive and just put that in, it sometimes gets hot but it is very good :)

WD drives have been found for the most part reliable even in case that sadly lacks any real air flow. But I've also seen where neglect to clean dust out of a case saw one rather old reliable 120gb ide model "cooked"! :eek: I was a little hot under the collar at the lazyness someone displayed on that! :rolleyes:

The main complaint heard since the first external drives were out is they do run a but warmer being sealed up into a sad plastic enclosure for the most part with simple vent slots on the top or one side. The WD MyBook Essential 500gb usb model here has been performing well however with the casing at room temperature and nothing more.

One thing to note about any external enclosure for sliding in a drive or one presealed for external use only is the key phrase: "Handle with care as the contents are fragile!". If you should drop...:eek::eek::eek: !!! say "good bye" to that fast! If the drive isn't damaged while the housing is you may likely see it installed internally since these are more or less your typical ide but mostly sata drive sealed into a separate housing.
 
i have dropped my hard drive a few time, but that is with a leather protective case (post pics later)

It is lined with plastic, so it keeps crap and stuff out of the case.

The leather case is what likely prevented any damage from a hard impact. Some time back someone else on the other hand was asking how to recover files from a misfortune of not having a protective cover and it fell.... CCCRASHHH! :eek: onto a wood floor
 
Yeah i back up my external on my main desktop, i mainly use my external for everything.

my desktop 320GB has the OS and some music on it :P, and my back up of external :)
 
While using the external drive here as a primary backup device I also keep a second partition for immediate backup on the Vista drive where both that and the external also see XP updates and other things stored. At any time I can easily wipe one of the sata drives in and see everything put back on in no time at all.
 
You can easily go with a usb external enclosure that will see that done on the spot. It works on the exact same idea but for simply using an extra drive externally you take from another system for rescuing files from an old case or simply adding room.

Yeah, it comes with cables, and you slot the hard drive into the case, and then there is like an adaptor that takes it from IDE / SATA to USB :)

For me, on some computers i need to use 2 USB ports, and on some just 1, depends on how much is getting to the ports.

really!? thats awesome, i did not know internal hard drives could use USB. ill have to look into building something myself
 
Premade usb enclosures have been around for some time now. Just take at the link posted earlier to see the variety of usb and usb-eSata-Firewire models.
