need RELIABLE external HDD

Well my 150 WD Raptor drive is filling up FAST

I would like some more storage, and I am thinking about a new external HDD to put my music/movies on. However, my music is VERY VALUABLE to me....and I can not afford to loose it due to a faulty/cheap HDD.

What is a good external HDD to purchase? I want it to be fast and quiet too
 
Since you already run a WD drive you already have the answer brand wise. The type of external can make a difference at times however.

The 500gb WD MyBook Essential usb model has worked out well here so far while you may to consider the eSata over usb or 1394 Firewire. An eSata connection is simply running an extension cord out from a regular sata port on the board while usb is still usb a totally separate bus.

With most external drives you will see the Windows/Mac compatibility software already to go with a factory Fat32 partition already on the drive. For 2000/XP/Vista users only Fat32 doesn't cut it having to reinstall the software over and over if you take the drive along with you between systems like a laptop at work, desktop at home?

If you start the system without the drive pluhhed in the installer will appear all over again once you start the next with the drive and Windows then redetects it as the installer comes up. The companies recommend first reformatting the factory Fat32 in order to convert that to NTFS for strictly Windows use before placing any files on a new drive.
 
Build one :P, i did, i built mine :)

Buy a 2.5" or a 3.5" enclosure and then buy a hard drive and put it in, you can get whatever size you want and you will save yourself a few dollars :P

well i am not going to be moving it from computer to computer, I just need a little more space. I am thinking that a 7200 should be fast enough, and I do not need more than 500 gb at the MOST.

and get a 500GB because then you will have plenty.

Off newegg, you can do one for under $100, that is a 3.5" and a 500GB hard drive, built.

I would honestly rather just buy one, but thanks for the idea

I can not loose my thousands of songs because of a low quality build
 
The one thing to add here about the differences between eSata and usb are quite obvious namely the access delay typically seen with usb. The eSata connection is controlled by the onboard sata/RAID controllers just any internal sata drive while usb lags when first accessing a drive due to being on a totally separate bus. Other then that I haven't had one complaint on the one in use here to mention.
