i have two SATA drives, one 120gig, one 250gig. i am currently using the 120 for my OS and all programs, and the 250 for media storage. whenever i boot i get an error message saying no master detected, press f1 to continue. i have no idea what any of this means and need someone to explain it in lamens aka dummy terms.

so make sure that one of the hard drives is connected to sata port 0 (it shoulud be lables on the motherboard just look close)

as far as I know, SATA drives do not need Master/Slave configs. More than likely your CD-Drive which is probably connected by a PATA (wide ribbon cable) cable and it is set to slave. You need to take out your cd drive and set it to "master", the config for master should be on the cd drive on the top or bottom. The setting will be a set of pin which you will have to set one or more jumpers to a certain setting. Many newer drives are able to select master or slave for themselves if you just take all the jumps out so try that first.

SATA technology eliminated the need for Master/Slave. Master/Slave was meant to distinguish boot order and priority when more than one drive was connected using the same cable.

now i know that isnt "dummy terms" but what i am getting at, is you must have some other problem. when you turn your computer on, go into the BIOS (pressing F10 or Del usually), check your boot order, make sure your 120 gig harddrive is set to boot first. if you need more details or more of a step by step, let me know

the labeling of the ports on the mobo has no significance. SATA port 0 is not "master" or whatever you are trying to get at. any one of the sata ports can be the primary boot device

oh did not know that, i always assumed you needed to have it on port 0 for master etc

nope, they are labeled so that you know which drives are plugged into which ports.

for example:

lets say you have 3 drives, and you want to RAID two of them, you need to know which ports to turn on RAID for.
