Problematic Computer.

Hello again, it's been a hell of a month for me. Two out of my three computers are not working properly, one laptop and one desktop. Right now I want to focus on my desktops issues since they are less serious. I will make another thread about my laptop in the next few days if I can't solve the problems on my own.

Anyway my older Dell (2002 Model Year) has many issues. I just reformatted this computer last November and really don't want to go through the whole process again. I suspect the computer has some malicious software on it. It was some software called MS Antivirus. It kept popping up harassing the user every 3 minutes. I did a virus scan with McAfee and it did find some sort of virus and deleted it. Still this MS Antivirus software kept popping up. So I did a manual search and deleted the software myself.

However after a few days the pop up came back. For the time being I just ignored it. Now my laptop is on the fritz and I need at least 2 computers working right. I came back to this computer seeing if I can fix it's issues since they are minor. So now I am on this computer and I don't see the pop up anymore, however the computer is running a bit slow. I tried doing a System Restore but it always fails to restore. I tried to shut down some programs in Msconfig, but I got an error message before it accepted. I tried downloading some Window Updates but it's not working. So I decided to run Hijack This and post the log here, hopefully someone can tell me whats wrong with this computer so I can fix it. Anyone at all? The computer is still causing me issues and I am in the process of downloading Stopzilla since I need this computer working properly now and not in a few days.
 
Bump again. :rolleyes:

Anyway I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy, I think I got rid of the Virus but then again I thought I got rid of it 2 other times. So the problem I have now is this computer is running slow. I am going to put up an updated Hijack this log, if anyone can tell me whats wrong with this computer and how to fix it please do. Thanks.

There are a few things that I can see in your hijackthis log that could be removed, however I personally can't see anything there that would be effecting your computer that much. I won't actually give me advice on the things that could be removed because when it comes to hijackthis logs you should only listen to people who know what they are doing.

In your situation I would personally reformat. I usually do once a month or so to keep my computer running nicely. However you've said that you don't want to do that. So I'm not really sure what assistance I can be.

Thanks for responding, right now from what I can see I solved the majority of the issues but it still runs slow. Even when I reformatted this computer after a few months it started to slow down again. I don't use the computer, my father does and he only does simple things. Mostly using AOL, and occasionally using Word to type his letters. So I can't figure out why this computer would be so slow.

Could you recommend any software that could speed it up? BTW, I give you a pat on the back for reformatting your PC every month. It's such a time consuming task.
 
if there isnt anything majorly wrong within the Hijackthis log, maybe try downloading Ccleaner and a 3rd party Disc Defragger (instead of the windows one) and try running them...
 
Yeah it usually takes me around a week to get everything back to the way I like it. It's like an obsessive compulsive disorder haha. Sometimes I just feel the need to totally format my hard drive.

As far as speeding up your computer goes, a system utilities program could help.

Try something like Tuneup Utilities 2008 - http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

They have a free trial.
Running the cleanup and registry defrag may help your computer to speed up in general.
Also running a disk defrag program such as Diskeeper could help.
Obviously these are just to generally help your computer, not to solve any specific problems.

I tried CCleaner on that computer, didn't really do much for it. I will try the non Windows Disc Defragger though, Google it and see my options.

Your lucky, I wish I had that disorder. I dread doing reformats, takes me half a day to do. I will download this utility and try a De-frag because in all honesty I haven't done one in a very long time.

In the past 11 years of owning PC's I always noticed once they get to be around 3-5 years old they slow down dramatically. Even reformatting these computers were only a temporary fix, within less than a year it would run slow again. I don't know why it happens, does anyone know? Also this computer has a hard drive thats only 3 years old, the original one crapped out.
 
There is no greater feeling then pressing the "format" button for me.
And yes I know what you mean, as the hardware gets older it seems to slow down even if you have reformatted.

Lucky for me I only have a 2 Folders to back up. 1 of 5gb with install files for programs such as iTunes and anything else that would take a while to download with my slow internet, and another also 5gb with my music. These 2 folders are backed up on my dad's computer, so basically I can reformat whenever I like and not have that much trouble.
However it is annoying having to get everything working how I like it, and every program I have to mess around with the settings until they are perfect again.

Thats a smart idea, I should save the install program for the software I use so when I have to reformat I don't have to re-download the software. Even with this old Dell, not much is really installed on it but it takes so long just to get the basic stuff back to normal.
