Friends Laptop Stolen, need advice

ok My friend called me and told me while he was at the theater, his car was broken into and his laptop was stolen (brand new, not even 2 weeks old). I actually have logmein installed on the laptop so if they happen to get on the internet, I will be able to see it. Is there anything I can do with it like remote accessing it and somehow finding out where it is or anything like that? Also, how about anything I could do to completely break it, like a few hundred or thousand viruses, I can just reformat/reinstall the OS if he ever gets it back.

Did you have software setup on it to do remote tracking/monitoring prior to the theft? Do you have a gps link on it?

If not, your not gonna find it.,,,

MR. OBvious says ..." Never leave valuable items in your car...locked or not"...

I don't think he had any kind of monitoring on it. I would like to at least f*** the laptop up from remote access if I could.

Unless you had something setup before your sorta out of luck.

Although, if you know the windows product code for the machine and can prove u are the owner..you can call microsoft and ask that that copy be disabled.

I know I've heard of that being done but you need the full key and proof u owned the machine.

Both of which may be difficult to achieve,

well logmein lets me completely control the machine so technically I could do something to it, any manual way of disabling the copy?

If logmein can do that...what are you asking for?

Do you have the windows o/s product key for that machine?

Well I've never had this happen, I can remote access and control the computer, but what can I do with it? If there isn't a way to find it, is there a way to break it or slow it down with a ton of viruses? I doubt I will be able to find it so I just want to cause some damage.

I'm not a security expert but it really seems like your grasping at false hope.

Its shitty that the machine is gone but I think your bud is shit outta luck.

Unless someone here knows about a loophole?? Cause I'd love to know as well as you guys.

hmmm, maybe i could just go and download a zip file of like....a few thousand viruses and deploy them by downloading it by remote access just to piss em off

I think you would be better off doing something productive, like installing a keylogger and getting the thief's bank login details and so on :)

Obviously I'm not serious and if you did do that you'd get charged with stealing money from them.

But I don't think you should bomb it with viruses.

Surely there has got to be some way to work out where it is, I mean if you went to the police wouldn't they be able to obtain the ip using logmein and work out exactly where it was?

Yes I realise that. Which is why I was thinking that if the police were doing it they could probably trace the IP and work out the exact address. I mean they must be able to do that, and if you have reported it stolen then surely you could ask them to help out and provide this option for them.

Well, if you have remote access to it you can screw with the thief. Leave messages on the computer, randomly install programs, delete files, ect. Once I wake up I'll post some better tricks to play. You could also change the login sound to porn or something. Just have to hope they have the volume on. Change the keyboard layout, or disable random features. Basicly make them hate having it. Hell, even post a ransom note in a text file on it. Blah, I need to wake up, off to get some Jolt.

why not just call his insurance company and get it replaced bingo problem solved lol unless he just has liability then he is screwed up...

Even if you have full coverage your contract could vary from theft.

i know both of my cars have full coverage for the car and anything in them in the event of a theft ie my wife's purse or a laptop if it was taken.. my dad has the same coverage and had his truck broken into while in a store and they took his fishing tackle all of which was replaced no questions asked

Yeah but policies have limits. Like it may be anything stolen up to $2000 total. It depends on your coverages and car insurances have all sorts of coverage rates. For example, my car insurance will cover up to $100k of medical bills for anyone injured in an accident I am involved in, anything over that comes out of my pocket. My friend who go into a wreck only had $25k of medical coverage and she broke her thumb pretty bad and had to have two surgeries to fix it, which cost like $40k, so her car insurance, even though it was full coverage did not cover everything.

Read the fine print. If your policy covered everything then your insurance probably has really good coverages. Insurance is really nothing more than a racket and a scam though, so they do things like I mentioned beforehand.
