okay hope i make sense of all this so you can help.

my boss bought vista ultimate to upgrade his vista business computer.
and then bought xp pro to upgrade his xp home computers

now if i pop in the disk for each OS while windows is running and install over top the old version this should convert to the new OS and keep all the files so that drivers will be there along with the software previously installed and files that go wit the programs. i think it can but need to be sure so i dont waste time not backing up the stuff. itll make it easier for me to jsut install over top the windoes and then bring the files back to the fodlers unless theri already still there.

and then jsut renetwork them together.
 
To upgrade the XP computers, boot into XP, insert the XP Pro disk and select upgrade. This will allow to upgrade to XP Pro without losing any important files. For Vista Ultimate, I believe you simply boot the install disk and select "Upgrade." Not sure, though, as I've never done it.
 
thing is theses discs are not upgrade discs thier full retial discs that do fresh copies. no upgrade option available.

i was tlakin about not booting off the cd after restarting.

i meant while windows is already rnning pop in the cd and then wait for auto run and install form there. i beleive doing it this way stops the right to format the drive and only allows writing over the OS

Yes, that is what you should do with the XP computers. You can try it with Vista, but I'm not sure if it'll work. With the XP disk, are you sure there is no upgrade option available? You said it's retail and with retail, you get the option to do a full install or upgrade.
 
yes the XP has a industiral key he bought syas only to repair or fresh copy of windows. ill jsut install it how i was gonan so the programs stay. and ill do the file and settgins transfer wizard to get his settings back the wya he had them and then his stuff hsould be back to normal.

the vista one i think is to be same as xp with installing over. and ill do the file transfer wizard for vista too so he can keep his settigns there too and then all i gotta do is bring hte progams back up unless the file wizard does this all for me. im trying to make htis easy as hell for me

hes got me upgrading 4 vista puters and 15 xp home computers and i dont wanan do fresh isntalls on them since each one has diff files. id rather install over then transefer settgins and programs over if that wizard allows me.
 
i read some sites fomr M$ and it stated that if i install windows onto the exsisting partiont windows is already on ill overwrite previous OS files but will keep all settigns, files, programs intact. so thats was my answer.
