Slight Formatting Problem

Hello all,

Well, i have a slight problem. I did some external hard drives for two friends, now i built them yesterday, and my computer wasn't working yesterday so i couldn't format them!

So today, i reinstalled Vista (cause i needed to) and go to format then now, and they won't format.

I'm going through Computer Management / Disk Management and i go to format the hard drive and this is the error that comes up:

Now is there i way i can fix this???

Can someone give me some formatting software for the mean time...

Thanks in Advance,

Cohen :)

Get GParted LiveCD and format it, repartition if you have to. If this doesn't work, there's something wrong with either the drive or your computer. Have you tried formatting on other machines?

BTW, did you try formatting through (My) Computer? Is the drive properly partitioned/does the partition show as "healthy"?

OK,

I'll download it thanks,

I tried another drive and did the same thing......

It is a BRAND NEW drive, bought it yesterday.... so it won't come up in my computer.

I did my brother's on my dad's computer (XP) and i'm using vista..... so i want to be able to it on my computer and now always use my dads!

Are you not able of formatting the drive on other computers, XP should do the job just as well? Is the drive actually partitioned? Have you tried deleting the existing partition (if any) and then creating a new one?

When I had partitioning problems on my external HD, all I had to do was to plug it in my Win98 rig, set it as a Int13h device and then delete the partition using FDISK. Then create a partition on any rig, it would always work. You don't have a spare machine with Windows 95/98(SE)/ME around do you?

I can format on other PCs but i want to be able to do it on mine....

The drive has not been partitioned or formatted before, i'm trying to do a partition and it comes up with that error....

I'm downloadng Gparted now, and going to try that.

Also i reformat my USB, but i went through my computer :P - I'll try reformatting it going through disk management...

Edit - Formats my USB fine! Also GParted won't work  Any other suggestions for software??

If all you need to do is to get the drives formatted, I can't see why you couldn't use other PCs...any specific reasons for this?

If I recall correctly, there was a trick, you had to "enable" or "activate" or something the partition/drive before it would work... can't remember the exact procedure, but try right clicking the "Disk X" on thepanel (The little space next the partition information things/bars/whatevers, that is), and see what options it gives you.

In disk Management cant you just right click on the drive at the bottom graphic pane and pick Initialize Disk.

nope, as i said, it is a brand new hard drive and needs to be formatted, i'm going to try it on my brother's vista PC tonight and see if it does the same, if not, i'll just have to use dad's XP machine...

So your saying Initialize doesnt show up when you right click on it. Did your computer give you a found new hardware when you booted after installing it?
