Recommendations? External Hard drives

Do you want one to sit at your desk all of the time or do you want one you can take everywhere you go???

Also what is your budget????

Id would like it if you could give me one of each, one to sit at my desk all the time and one to take with me wherever I go.

Budget... well I don't have much knowledge on how much they cost, but I've seen it would range between 150-220?... But if you find that a external HDD is worth the extra few bucks, please mention it.

Alright, here is one to sit at your desk - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822101121

and one for on the go - have a look at these

The WD Passports are good, and i have heard they are really good... i have an external hard drive, and i built mine, meaing, i bought the case and put a 2.5" Laptop hard drive in the case, now you could do that if you would like to, and you might save yourself a bit of money.... just a suggestion.

If i use the hard drive to store file such as movies, pictures, music, programs, etc...etc... nothing installed in it, would there be a big difference between a 5400rpm and a 7200rpm?

How much cache would be recommended?

I would assume that a high reading/writing speed is to be required for backups and all that right? A 25MB/s read speed is good for External hard drives?

I don't think you would notice a difference, because it is going to be USB 2.0, you won't really notice a difference, also i recommend a cache of 16MB or 32MB, that is up to you.

25mb/s is about right.
the rpm will matter with accessing/writing, so higher would be better, most decent drives are 7200 anyway...
and do you have an eSATA port? that 's way better than USB 2.0

It is faster, yes, but you wouldn't find it on older desktops and stuff if u needed to transfer files between computers. For the desktop ED, esata is better, but to portable ED's even have eSata?

The thing is that I want to use it for my laptop; thus no eSata ports, just usb 2.0

One question, which would be a better drive? the Western Digital? or the Seagate?

by the way... whats the rpm for the External HDD of the WD link? (WD MyBook Essential 1TB) And what is the cache for both the WD and Seagate External HDD's I put links up for?
