New to Forum - need help with antivirus

Hi,

I am new to this forum and have a question about antivirus software. I currently have Norton antivirus software on my computer. I have been advisted by the IT person at my company that AVG software is a better program. I have downloaded the free AVG software (file name - avg_free_stf_en_8_169a1359) and would like to install it. My question is, how do I disable my Norton antivirus without removing it from my computer?

Will I need to add a firewall to my system with the new software? If so, what should I use?

Sorry for all the questions, I am somewhat new to computers.:D

I'm not completely sure Norton can be completely disabled so it doesn't create conflicts with another Anti-Virus.

I'd suggest uninstalling Norton and going with an Anti-Virus such as Avira Anti-Vir one of my favorites. :)

Protecting yourself from Viruses is not enough, you have to take a few measures to make sure they can't crawl into your system. Such as installing a Firewall i recommend Comodo Firewall Pro, it's easy to use and it's one of the best out there (someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

You also have to protect yourself from Spyware. Spyware is more of a general catagory although most Spyware programs also protect against Ad-Ware, Keyloggers, and other types of malicious programs/code. For Spyware protection i would recommend Spybot Search & Destroy, it's one of the better ones.

Well, I uninstalled Norton and installed AVG, now when my computer starts up, I hear the hard drive REALLY going crazy for at least 20-30 minutes!!! What is going on??!! Is it scanning at start-up???? I have looked at the AVG program and it doesn't appear to be running. Everything is running INCREDIBLY slow. Any help??!!:confused:

That's exactly what it's doing, scanning at start up. If you want you can stop the scan by right clicking on the little AVG box next to the clock in your task bar and clicking stop all scans. The little box should have an arrow in it.

With AVG 8 I'm pretty sure you can stop the auto scans all together by double clicking you AVG box in the taskbar next to the clock. Then going computer scanner and edit the schedule scanner. Once your in their untick enable this task and thats that. You should still do regular scans though. But that will stop it scanning on startup.
 
I was able to stop the AVG software from scanning at start up, but the problem still exists. To give you a better idea of what started this problem, it began (as I mentioned in my original post) when I uninstalled Norton and Installed AVG then COMODO firewall. I now believe the problem is with COMODO. I say this because I uninstalled COMODO because I was having this problem but it still persisted. I noticed that in my toolbar at the bottom of the screen, there is an icon for "SafeSurf". If I exit this program (each time after start up), the problem seems to disappear. I have found no way to get rid of "SafeSurf", there is no uninstall program and I tried to just delete the entire folder from my computer without any luck.

Now for the real question: How can I install COMODO firewall without "SafeSurf" running at start up?

Read up on an use autoruns to control startup items.
