I have a few cd's with things like XP, video games, etc that are getting worn out, I wanted to back them up to a newer disc to preserve my software, but when I try and go to run something it says the disc is not in the drive, although I received no errors during the copy process.. any ideas??

Only time I had that error was when the discs went bad.

I would reinstall your burners drives....also you might wanna look into a 2nd HD for storage needs. Its cheaper and safer then using discs. Do the discs work in another PC? If not then I would say they are bad. I have had CDs burn perfectly and be unusable before....reason I use Nero and nothing else now to avoid that issue.

I have a spare 500GB HD that I got for 60 bucks that I leave unplugged when I am not using it. I store games/music/etc but I also make DVD disc back ups of really important files to save room and discs/money.

I would do that, but many games require the cd in the drive to play them, and I'm not sure if it will let me run the copy of a cd off another drive and work..

If thats an issue just use a no-cd/fixed exe crack. I hate needing to use a cd to load a game, so I just find the no-cd file and im set.

What I do is go to the device manager, and uninstal the ahrdware, restart the comp and let windows reinstall it, and then it will read my discs again. Does your drive read all other cds fine. If it doesnt, then id say its a hardware, driver problem. Try the cd in another drive.

Cd may just be going dead, and it could jsut come to luck if the the cd will be read or not.

It reads all of my "originals" just fine, but the back-up copies that I make it tell me to insert the CD when I went to verify if it would work, the data is on there, but something is preventing a good copy or something from working.. I use decent quality media as well..

I think you could do that with something like DaemonTools. But careful, you have to look for a good one because most contain a virus. :(
