Does this graphics card need a power supply?

Hello,

I'm thinking of getting a new graphics card as my current integrated chipset is quite poor. I've been recommended the Radeon x1650pro AGP.

I've been told that this will simply be a case of plugging it in, installing it, and away we go. I've been reading about this card on other forums and most people say it's the best in this price range, they also report it needing a 400w power supply. The website for Sapphire who manufactured one of the makes of this card state that it needs a power supply of 350w.

The person who recommended me this card insists that when they were using it they didn't need additional power.

I can only just afford this card, so there's no way that i'd be able to buy a power supply aswell, or anything else i'm probably gonna need.

Can anybody help me out? Anyone ever use this particular card?

If you are asking if the card needs a separate power supply for it, then the answer is no. Your computer must have a 350W or greater according to the ATI system requirements for that card. What power supply do you currently have? The specs are usually written on the power supply's label if you don't know.
Also, just asking if you are certain your motherboard has an AGP slot and not PCI-E for the graphics card. The two are not interchangeable.
 
Here is roughly what it says on the psu,

Output: +12v
Max Power +5v
300w -12v

I'm certain it's AGP i have.
 
I see. I couldn't really afford to do both right now, so i guess i'll have to leave it for now.

At the moment i have an intel integrated chipset so i was just looking to get my first proper graphics card, and perhaps i aimed to high.

I don't suppose you can think of anything that would be more suitable?
 
I'm gonna wait till after christmas to sort this out. I will have the money for a better card and a psu, not to mention i'll be able to pay someone to install it for me.

Well $ aside the installation of the PSU and GPU is pretty simple, so once you get the parts come back and someone will be able to give you step by step directions on how to get it running.

Yeh,,,don't pay someone...you can install yourself in 30 seconds....maybe less!

Haha, that's kind of an exaggeration, especially if he's never done it before. Plus, putting the PSU in can be a feel-it-out kind of installation since you have to unplug everything and find where the new ones go.

Of course, you were probably intentionally exaggerating, but I just wanted to clear it up so he doesn't get his hopes up (and feel down on himself when it takes him more than 30 minutes+). :D
