I HATE Computers

Well I've read the thread.
They are giving you solid advice, so that always good.

In terms of HDD 'recovery' you can run Spinrite. Granted the program isn't free, but it's going to be your best bet to keep you from needing a new HDD, if yours is bad.

I'm sure you'll figure it out,
Bob

Heh, Thanks, Bob. I should have added chapters and a contents to that post, Eh...

I don't have anything on the HDD that I need to save, as I have a second HDD with all my personal files and documents on, so that's good.

It's like £40 that program... Wow. If my HDD is bad, I'll send it back again. The one I currently have is actually a replacement as the first one completely died. He's me thinking Seagate were a good brand!

Me too. But I also love computers at the same time. I don't know why, but it's just the way it is...

only hate 'em when they don't work.

OK, can you get an RMA? Try a different hard drive, like some one on that forum said. Otherwise, some said defective windows CD, try and see if you can get a different one.

hope i was of help!

That is true...

I'll try a different HDD, Thanks. I tried an XP CD, but that game me a 'A Disc Read Error Has Occurred, Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart' error message.

Ha, I love Seagate, but all manufactures have bad batches.
Sign on xfire when you get the chance.

I can't get on xFire, I can't even get into Windows.

I skimmed through that whole mess. The problem is you have too many people giving you random advice. Now, I want you to understand that is one major downfall of building your own system. You take away the "it just works" part when building your own.

First off, no one is at all using any sort of standard troubleshooting method, instead they have you running all over the place like Michael Jackson with his hair on fire.

The RAM test was a good start. We can assume your RAM is good because it showed no errors. So, from here we will use what is called the 'process of elimination,' which is a very common and well used method of troubleshooting.

Now, the whole your 3D mark shows no improvement is most likely due to bloat, crappy coding or shotty drivers for your video card and in the OS.

The disk I/O errors you got when trying to install XP (I think that is what you were trying to do at one point) could be a bad cable, bad HD, bad optical drive. Unfortunately windows does not do any advanced logging so you have to use the trial and error method.

The fact that you have wiped your HD and loaded an OS clean tells me that most likely your cables are good, your drives are good, and your media is good, otherwise it would probably fail over and over again. The only difference is that XP fails and Vista doesn't.

I do have to ask this, did you patch and update Vista after install? This is very important, as many of those patches fix crap like this.

What OS is currently on the drive and is it bootable?

yeah, maybe that second one you were using? i know you have your stuff on ther but...

EDIT: the hard drive is what I meany when I said the second one...

Sorry, I thought you might have had xfire on your sister laptop.
If you send me your email address I can just accomplish it that way.

Tlarkin- He was having corrupted versions of both Vista and XP, as long as I was reading it correctly lol.
Edit- You probably mean that XP was refusing to boot period, when Vista was just having intermittent problems.

Well, Yeah... it does go right out the window doesn't it...

The thing is Vista and XP both fail, when I try to boot Vista, I get 'BOOTMGR is missing' and when I try to boot XP, I get 'Disc Read Error Has Occurred'... Both ask me to Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart. Or, as I have named it, Retard!

I didn't patch Vista, No. I installed my MOBO Drivers which asked me to restart so I did. Bad idea? I did notice on EVGA's Web Site it looked like they have some new ones, which may be different to the ones on my CD that came with the MOBO. So, maybe if I whack the internet on there first, get them, install 'em, don't restart, then patch Vista up, you think that may work?

I just don't get how it all happened in the first place...

I don't have an OS that is bootable at the moment.

Bob, Nope, My sis doesn't game, so she doesn't have Xfire. Sorry, man.

[email protected] is my Email, but I can't really check that as... I don't have a computer. You can always PM me on here if you want, I'll try and check them when I'm on my sis' laptop checking this thread.

Thanks for the advice so far, guys! :)

Here is what you do.

Go down to basic configuration

1 HD

1 video card

Install the OS, make sure everything works, then add in each extra part one at a time and see which one, if any creates a failure. If you are getting errors with a basic configuration try just one stick of RAM at a time.

I would also recommend making an image of the system once you get it up and running the way you want.

Alright, I'll give that a shot. I'll try only one GPU and HDD in there, I know the RAM is Ok, so I'll leave that all in there for now.

Should I patch it all up and stuff when I get into it, in an attempt to stop it having this error, I mean like not reboot after installing drivers and stuff, get the internet working and update it all...

Thanks, man!

Alright, I'll check it out, Bob. Thanks.

Sounds like a dead HDD. :(

I had the same thing on my older computer, i suggest RMAing the HDD that's giving you problems but do everyone Else's advice first. ;)

I was thinking that it might be a dead hard drive too. Does your other hard drive work?

Not sure, haven't turned it on in a while.

But it let me boot it up when i switched the sata port on the motherboard.

(lightbulb) Danny! Try that! It worked for me when i had the same error.

My other HDD has all my personal files on it, so I can't format that, I need them, stuff like University work.

I'll try another SATA port, thanks man!

I'm so bummed out over this! :(

I read the thread on overclock.net site. I feel bad for you. Did you get it to work, can you boot up, are you able to load into windows, also are you sure you installed windows xp. During installation did your head ur hdd spin. I had a problem like this but no with windows it was another os. The problem was that I ran installation it read my hdd and I installed it for some reason when installation completed and pc rebooted I got black screen it was like it wasn't even writing on the hdd for some reason. The problem was that I had this option in bios that was causing the problem. ACHI and SATA option. For the program to install and to run I needed to have the option set to ACHI, cause it was set to SATA. On the other hand when I formatted my pc and tried installing windows I had to change it to SATA for some reason ACHI doesn't work with windows in my case. Going back I also thought my HDD was dead, but it wasn't. If you have a spare pc or a friend's pc try ur hdd on his pc and install windows on it and see. Like everyone says your HDD might be dead.
