I HATE Computers

OK, I talk to my brother, because he had a similar problem. I am going to diagnose(spelled wrong, some doctor I am) that HDD as broken. Save your self any more hassle, get a different one. Now here is something else to cheer you up. my brother and I have SEAGATE. I had problems with mine before too!!! DAMN SEAGATE,I AINT BUYIN FROM YOU!!

REGARDING FILES THAT YOU CAN"T LOSE
Sounds like SEAGATE is not the way to go. Western Digital for me!
k, if you still have a working HDD and you want to copy files from it not in windows, use command prompt, which you can access via windows CD in the repair menu. (if you boot from windows CD, well, DVD) I did this with my non-working tower before I reformatted and reinstalled windows. This works for all USB flash drives and external drives as well.

In Command prompt:
type xcopy /?
it will tell you all the detailed instructions.
go into the folder you want to copy from via "cd (folder name)", then copy like so

D:itunes\xcopy D: /s c:\music

This would copy itunes from D: to music on C:
That way you don't have to lose your files and you can reformat you HDD, without ever going into windows.

Awesome, thanks for the advice!

I'm in Windows and it boots fine each time. I removed all but one stick of RAM (So I now only have 1GB installed) I have only one GTS in, also.

I created a partition (32GB) on my WD 120GB drive and installed Windows onto that. However, this time, Windows Instillation did see my 500GB drive there. Although I didn't try installing onto it.

Here's how my HDD's are at the moment;

The 'Windows C' is a partition of my 120GB drive. A strange thing though, I can see and use my 500GB drive, making me think it's not faulty? So, I may just leave it as it is. and use all the drives and partitions.

I still have one problem I need sorting, When I boot, I have the choice of selecting which OS I want to boot into, but I have two Windows Vista, I selected the top one, which appears to be the fresh install. What's the second one though, I don't seem to have it installed any-where else... Any ideas?

Thanks guys!

Turn SMART status on in your BIOS and it will spit out all hard drive errors if any and can detect drives that are starting to fail.

Have you done a complete wipe and reload and complete patch and update of Vista yet? Are you quick formatting your drives, or doing a regular format?

Alright, so turning it on will let me know if there is an error you mean? How will it do that?

Well, on the HDD that I currently have Windows on, there was only my pictures, music and documents. I then partioned it, so it was clean.

I formatted the other 500GB HDD, with Gparted. I don't think it was a quick format.

I hadn't installed any of the updates when I restarted it, I'm just getting some now. I'm going to put my RAM and other GTS back in soon.

Thanks for the help!

Ok, I'll take a look for that, Thanks man.

Do you have any ideas about me having two Vistas to chose from when I boot?

If it was installed twice your boot loader will see both entries, that is normal. You will have to go in and manually delete one to get rid of that.

Is it up and running Danny? Too many suggestions being thrown in and didn't want to add any more and confuse you. Did tlarkins process of elimination pinpoint the problem cos your'e having a shite load of problems lately

I don't think it's a good idea to keep a hard drive that is giving you errors. If I were you I would get all the valuable data off your hard drive that is giving you problems and get rid of it.

If I am not mistaken Seagate has a five year warranty on their hard drives.

i know the problem has been kinda sorted but i would like to bring to attention what happened to me.

my computer would not boot up after i added some uv cathodes and cold cathodes turnd out that my thermaltake tr2 550watt psu didnt have enough power for my rig with the lights on lol. (lights where on but no one was home)

if i switched them off it would boot, if i switched them on my pc would freeze with the hard drive led on constant.

i have taken my lights out now and im waiting to get corsair 750watt psu so i can crossfire another 4850 and put my cathods in!

just a thought for you to consider

I don't see any specific errors posted. If it was file system corruption then it was software all along.

google how to edit the bootcfg.exe or whatever it is in Vista, in XP it was the boot.ini but in Vista they changed it.

I took a look, but couldn't find anything. I don't get why I'd have two there though. I can't find any other instillations on any of my HDD's.

Yeah, it's running at the moment, Dave. With only 1GB of RAM and only one GTS in there. I know, I've been having a load of problems have't I... it's not good. Hope it's fixed now though.

Well, it seems to be working now. I guess it was some sort of corruption... I don't really know.

I didn't / don't have any lights in there. I wasn't using over 380watts either. So, I doubt it was a power issue.
