Possible to repair Vista from a different hard drive?

I got a virus :( It didn't seem to do anything until I tried to restart my computer...as soon as it goes to boot windows it shows a very quick blue screen then restarts. Does the same thing in safe mode... I put my vista install disc in to boot to that and attempt a repair but after it loads all the stuff from the disc it blue screens again...this time the screen stays up until I shut down the computer. So is there anything I can do? I have a couple extra hard drives would it be possible to install vista to a different drive, boot it, then fix my main drive somehow?

Yes, you could install vista on your spare.

Remember to put the problematic drive in as a slave!

After installing vista on the spare post back, I'll have more instructions. ;)

ok i'll get right to work. Shouldn't take very long. One of my spare drives is only 40gb so maybe I'll install Vista on it and just leave it on there...for the next time I get a virus :P

I had the exact same problem with both my laptop and desktop computers just recently. I don't think it's a virus. We had a power outage, and this affected my desktop right away while in sleep mode. For my laptop, it happened a few days later on the next restart. They were both powered on a surge protector. I tried everything to solve this problem, but couldn't find a solution. The only solution i've came up with was to reformat and do a fresh install of windows xp/vista. I had no important stuff on my desktop since it's a gaming rig, as well as my laptop since i always store important files in my portable disk drive. If you have important files on your hard drive you might need to insert that hard drive in another computer in order to save those files

You obviously didn't read the post.

He can't install vista.

ok back up...having weird symptoms now

tried to install vista on the other drive...got the blue screen in the same spot! So now i'm thinking it's the mobo? Just for giggles I reset the mobo's settings via the little jumper and now both hard drives boot. However now it seems to just crash randomly. Like no blue screen, just immediately shuts down...it will wait a few seconds then try to restart sometimes crashing again immediately. I'm thinking maybe I need to reinstall the bios? Is it possible for a virus to screw with the bios on my mobo?!

EDIT: Altho I'm rather hesitant because if it crashes while I'm updating the bios...very bad right?

ok well it was ok for a little bit. It booted and I started a McAfee virus scan. Last I checked it was 96% done with 25 detections...then while I was watching tv it just crashed so I have no idea if the scan finished or what. Tried to start in safe mode and it crashed again :(

EDIT: well I booted it again and checked the quarantine, removed everything the last scan picked up. Even did a system restore...but it's still just shutting down at random points. It's almost like the power is cut off...think the PSU is bad? I don't know what caused all this...

EDIT: well I did ANOTHER system restore and another virus scan (only 2 detections this time) and it actually seems to be running ok...the restore took be back before I installed 2 windows updates so they could be the cause...or it could have just been a virus. Who knows, but if it never happens again I will be thankful.

He can't install vista.

Where did he say that exactly? Repairing is not installing vista...

Like i said, i had a similar problem. I think one of your computer components maybe damaged, possibly the mobo. When my computer loads, it goes right into the blue screen very quick then restarts. Also, i could not go into bios at all with my usb keyboard, It could not detect it. I had to use my old PS/2 keyboard in order to get into bios by pushing "F10" or "del". There was a small glitch in the mobo i assume, for me. And that was a result from a power surge. Later on my usb keyboard started working again.

This was just my experience in solving the problem, i hope this helps

well i left it on today while i was at school because I was downloading a few torrents. I just got home and uTorrent wasn't open...when I opened it, it immediately started checking the torrents which means it shut down at some point :(

it's becoming less frequent but it's still happening!

and now for some reason my start bar is white...it's really strange looking. I have no idea whats going on :(
