Hard Drive Whining and Computer won't boot up.....Help!!!

Well I went into my desktop today to give it a good cleaning and I messed things up. I changed the thermal paste on the CPU and in the process I bent one of the pins while putting it back in, I tried starting up but nothing. I took the CPU out again and straightened the pin out, put it back in and powered up, but now my hard drive sounds like it is spinning really fast and the screen doesn't turn on. Also I want to add that the cooling fan for the hard drive seems dead, could it be that my hard drive happened to die while I was doing the cleaning or does trying to boot up with a bent pin have anything to do with it. I also want to note that I use this desktop for a surveillance system in my business and it has been running 24/7 for the past 4 years. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

Couple of questions... Just to make sure, you were doing these repairs/upgrades with the computer unplugged correct? It is possible that with the chip not properly installed the HDD fan got zapped. Do you have any sort of diagnostic lights or possibly a digital readout on the mobo that gives out error codes of any kind? The BIOS or CMOS might just need to be reset as well from a slight power surge to the mobo from the chip...

I was doing the repair with the power off, and when I turn the computer on now there is a single green light on the mother board that is lit. The HDD fan is separate from the hard drive so I dont see why the hard drive wouldnt work without the fan. The hard drive sounds like it is spinning really fast and it doesn't stop spinning. Is there any way to test the hard drive??

If you don't hear a beep, then the BIOS isn't posting properly. You might get lucky by resetting the CMOS, but the mobo may have gotten fried (or some part of it) with the bent pin and turning it on. I'd see what the light by doing a Google search on that particular make/model of mobo and the single light means.

That's a good idea, but usually you'll at least get a beep from the BIOS, even if something isn't plugged in correctly... Try it anyway, better than spending money on a new mobo that isn't necessary... :)

Did you try putting in a new cmos battery? I know my computer acted all weird and did some pretty random things until I went to radio shack and got a new one.

What I think happened was 2 of the pins in the CPU touched, and when I powered up it must have fried everything. I am in the process of ordering a new MB/CPU combo on Tiger.
