Router and IP assignment

I do a fair amount of work installing routers and access points for pubs and restaurants FREE WiFi access.

What routers do others use?

We are finding a lot of people say that our systems can take a long time to dish out an IP address. We have used Draytek, Netgear, Linksys, 3com, and still seem to have the same issue.

Is there anything around that can sort out issuing IP's quickly?

you could take it off dhcp, but this will mean each individual person would have to enter a different ip, probably not good for restraunts and that. apart from that, not really a lot you can do

The client is most likely trying to lease the same IP it had before at it's last wireless connection. Your DHCP service has to run a check so see if that IP is in use. That takes a second, then it probably says no that is not a valid IP, have this one, and it then pushes the new network settings down as well. Also it will have to resolve DNS again, which takes a second.

How long is long? My linksys works fine, people can connect to it in a few seconds. You might have something incorrectly configured.

Normally it takes around ten seconds I suppose, but they are complaining when it is busy it can take a minute or two (litterally).

If you have the money you can install Cisco back end network equipment that supports a technology called port-fast, which speeds up the DHCP lease times. It isn't cheap and there is a higher learning curve of running that hardware.
