What is overclocking?

Noob question. What is overclocking? What are the benefits and the downsides?

downsides are

- Shorter lifespan of the overclocked thing (usually it wont matter cause you will replace it much earlier cuz there will be much better parts)

- Chance of frying the thing (usually doesnt happen)

overclocking is running anything out of specified spec's, if you wanted to, you could overclock your toaster

"Overclocking" is defined as running a device outside of it's normal speed/frequency, sure overclocking is part of the general idea of running a device out of it's specified specs, however running a device outside of it's specified specs is not always considered overclocking.
