Thoughts on HP Pavilion A6407C

I have had a laptop for over 4 years now. It was real nice at the time but now it has become outdated and slow. I was thinking about using my laptop only when I needed it, and buy a new desktop computer for my desk. My price range is < 600$, and I found a HP Pavilion A6407C for the desktop and this for a monitor (doesn't matter that much to me). I am a programmer so the high memory is good since it is not uncommon for me to have 6 programs and 12 internet tabs open at a time. I'm not much of a gamer, but I play CounterStrike and Sims 2 occasionally. So here's my question to you: Does this computer look like a good setup? Is it cost effective? And also, I can't seem to find XP computers anymore, and I am a little nervous to use Vista. For those of you who do have Vista, have you ever downloaded a program and not been able to use it because you had Vista? This is the major reason I am worried about it.

Thanks in advance!

Is it cost effective? ... Not really. Try delloutlet.com for their recertified/refurb/scratch and dent. You can get an Inspiron 530 quad-core for about the same price or a dual-core for less. This computer comes with integrated graphics which will reduce your quality on the gaming. I use 64 bit vista so there have been occasions where I wasn't able to use a program BUT 100% of the time it was because I had 64 bit, and not the more common 32 bit version.

Memory is dirt cheap, I mean dirt. You can get 4gb for ~$35 now so I wouldn't make your selection based on high amount of RAM since those companies charge too much for just a little more RAM.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the Dell site - I will check it out later. I know I don't want 64-bit Vista, but what about getting a 64-bit processor? If I have a 64-bit processor but not 64-bit Vista, will I still have the same problems?

EDIT: I could not find very many comparable PC's on delloutlet.com. About the integrated graphics, I have a pretty nice graphics card already. Will it work to put that in the PC and use that instead?

possibly, what kind of card is it?

32bit = 3.25GB memory maximum.

64bit = 128GB memory maximum.

Go with custom built. Budget?

I think it's just the coding for vista that's limiting it to 128GB because mathematically speaking, 64bit should be able to handle around 2TB+ of RAM.

99% of the processors now are 64-bit architecture. All of the intel c2d's and up and AMD's x2 and up are 64 bit based. You cannot run a 64 bit OS without a 64 Bit proccy, which is kind of hard.

I can't afford custom built, but what are other people's thoughts on the above computer? I guess the main two questions are: is the processor acceptable for light gaming (I mean like just Sims 2) and computing (programming), and is the computer cost effective?

you should just get the computer you posted

you're so stuck on it that you are blind to the fact that I posted a solution that could save you money and perform better...

I didn't say I wont accept your solution, I just said that I couldn't find any comparable PCs for the same price or less - they were all for more money. And plus, the computers there all got horrible reviews so I don't feel good buying them. Is that enough reason for you? Let me restate my question:

Is this computer one that is worth the money? Also, Is the processor good for very light gaming (Sims 2) and some programming?
