why ATI over Nvidia?

The same reason they say ATI is the same reason they say not AMD. Kinda of contradicting isnt it.

So why ATI? Is it a publicital marketing strategy? I plan to use 2 9800GTX+ in my next system.

there really is minimal difference in the 2 but most people like the brand that has the best current card out or best bang for the buck in this case it is ATI with the 4870x2 and the 4800 series in general. This will of course change in the future... but there are fanboys out there that like one particular brand because of previous experiences with them.

People might call me a "fan boy" of Nvidia because I will only buy Nvidia cards. One time I bought an ATI card about 3 years ago and had nothing but problems with the thing. Those junk Catalyst drivers I think. It would dump the drivers about every week and crash while playing a game about every other time I would play. I had a great case and no matter what I did the thing would get soo hot it would almost burn you if you touch it. Complete waste of money.
I have never had a problem with any Nvidia card. Drop it in, load drivers and awesome performance will follow. The Nvidia card makers have the best customer service in the industry! I have done the step-up programs twice now without a problem. I will pay extra money for a solid product that I know will last for a while from a company that I know will keep it's word.
I am glad to see ATI with some solid products out on the market. Their cards perform very well these days and have a good price
I am actually starting my next build and thought about doing a full ATI theme computer (Phenom, 4870, red case, red lights, everything) but decided not to at the last minute

The 4-series cards by ATi were a massive success, initially they held the performance crown and even after the launch of the 200-series cards by NVIDIA ATi clearly held the number-1 price/performance place for a good while. During that time, majority of people went with the extremely popular ATi bandwagon, and even though NVIDIA has now lowered the prices and compete well with ATi, the bandwagon apparently gained too much momentum... and everyone going with the bandwagon like to trample over anyone recommending NVIDIA cards.

Both are needed to keep prices in check.Remember when the gtx 280 debuted at $699 and then droped to $649 stayed there a little while then droped close to the prices we have now becuase of ATI's 400 series.Also without competition we would still be seeing geforce 2 128 and ati rage 128 cards retailing for $500. There would be no incentive to increase performance.Truth be told we probably need another manufacturer or 2 to bring prices close to price/performance of other high performing parts of a PC.The high end video cards are the highest priced partsof a system other than the extreme quad core line of processors

This not the case from what I can see. I see 9600 and 9800 series cards going for between $85 and $130. And the 98000GTX+ is selling for ~$200 while most of the 4870 cards are selling ~$270. So from what I am seeing, Nividia is way less expensive and they perform very well for the price you pay.
Pretty close but you would compare the 9800GTX+ with the 4850 price/performance not the 4870. The 4870 would be the GTX 260. But like I said in post 2#. The very same reasons people tell you to buy a ATI card is the same reasons they tell you not to buy a AMD processor. I think its funny.

i'm no fanboy. i have owned an ATI X800GTO, then an NVidia 8500GT, and now an NVidia 8800GT. but my next card will be either an ATI 4850 or 4870. why? because after rebates you can get a 4850 for $120 which is AWESOME.
so sure. i am on the bandwagon. but this card doesnt take much power, it doesnt overheat (if you know how to fking use ATITool) and once again, it costs as little as $120, $80 less than i spent for my 8800GT just a little while back.

I had a Geforce 2GTS, a MX440, a fx5200, a 6200, a 6800GT after that I had 2 7800GTX's. then I decided to give Ati a shot. I'm really not too fuzzed about wich brand I have. all my cards worked fine (none of them died on me) so really, who cares?
the decissions of my next card will most likely end up in the mood I'm in, and weither I like Red or Green better at that particular moment.
