Windows update + stability problems

Allright. I have two problems with my computer. Let's start of with an introduction of my computer:

OS: Windows XP SP 3 and Ubuntu Linux (dualbooting)
Processor: AMD Athlon 3500+, 1 GB RAM
Motherboard: ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe
Videocard: ATI RADEON X800GTO
Harddrives: 2 (one internal, containing Windows, one external, containing Linux)

Now let's start with my first problem. My first problem is that some updates (using automatic update) are just not installing. Not all though, most install just fine. One of the updates which is not installing is the update Microsoft Core XML Services, which is rather important. So, how do I fix it (permanent)?

Second problem is that my computer is a bit unstable. Sometimes explorer.exe crashes (Read/write errors), mostly when clicking left on a file, a doing some operation, like deleting renaming etc. (it crashes when you click delete/rename/whatever).

One time, I selected a file and used the Shift + delete keys. I got a conformation dialog (are you sure you want to delete blablabla?), but the button saying 'Yes' was missing (we know for certain you are not sure LOL). I could select it using TAB though, and when I hit enter, the file was deleted. When I tried to delete another file, it happened again. After that, an error screen appeared with the text (don't recall it completely) "Fader: explorer.exe blablabla". A memory error once again.

Now I can think of two possible causes. First cause could be the RAM. It is overclocked, and the could be the problem. I do not believe this to be the problem however, because it has been overclocked by just a minor bit. Second cause could be the registry. I have modified my PC quite heavily, and I think that some garbage has been left behind by some of programs.

I think you will not be able to help me with the second problem, and I would be grateful if you could just help me with the first. But if you want to give the second one a shot, you are free to go.

Well, it passes the microsoft windows genuine advantage check. But let's just say that it didn't come out of the box. I suppose you know what that means.

No, that is not the reason. I can actually download updates from the Microsoft update site. Including Optional ones, including downloads which require a genuine version of Windows and so on.

And besides, automatic updates install critical updates even on pirated versions.

Sorry Dude Honestly tell you the truth.. Windows Update is a GREAT idea... but I thought it was poorly implemented into windows XP.. and VISTA does a magnificent job... my only recommendation... is a fresh reboot... or to try installing the update of the microsft website...

prob half the reason the person is have probs, dont install windows updates. they are the black plague of windows.

I say reinstall the OS, no more updates. THose could be the problem. The fact the ur OS is not gen could be why you have problems. Sure you can DL them, but they might still mess things up.
