Which OS?

ive not had 1 problem....

like the look of it and i like the way it runs, the obly downside i have about it is the amount of ram it uses when idle-

got 4gigs of 1066mhz so it doesnt worry me :)

Actual boot time, not so bad, about the same as XP not drastically changed. A bit faster maybe.

from Power > POST > boot > log in window > log in > launch firefox, takes for freaking ever. I can get into vista just fine, and my start up is very minimal, but if I launch firefox at log in, I get the spinning circle of death for a good 20+ seconds while firefox loads for the first time.

I'll have to try that and let you know how it goes, but if I recall, I don't think I've had problems like that.

Not to sound fanboyish but my MBP and my Linux box, I can cold boot, log in and launch a web browser almost instantly. On the MBP if it was hibernating it takes a bit longer for everything to come back up sometimes.

20 seconds? good gosh! Upon first sight of my desktop, I can load firefox in under 5 seconds, of course IE loads nearly instantly because it isn't third-party software and is pretty much integrated into the OS. Our Macs in the lab load Safari instantly upon cold boot as well, unfortunately I can't install firefox on them but I would expect similar results (a couple extra seconds because it is third-party). Also after the first boot of firefox in Vista, any consecutive attempts to run FF are nearly instant because of the caching.

I would say I know what I am doing, clean install of Vista, the system is barely a month old, and the hardware specs are good. Vista sucks. It could be a memory leak in firefox who knows, because the memory controller driver for my system sucks ass. That is the problem with windows, too many possibilities of problems when you build your own system.

I will never use IE, that bloated piece of crap is hell to deal with and I despise active X.

I am not saying it is your fault. I have firefox on a different drive from the OS so that would definitely provide a boost to load times. I have enabled to enhanced SATA performance feature. My startup items are limited to apps in the tray. My Vista installation is on a newer HDD with a 32MB cache. I have 5 different hard drives that take the load off of eachother, my videos are on one, games on another, program files on another, OS on another. Those, among other things, are things I can attribute to my program loading times being quick. No tweaks, just ways for enhanced loading performance. Of course, my Vista startup takes slightly longer than most but I don't think you can judge the usefulness of an OS by how fast it loads on startup.

I didn't tell you to use it, just saying the IE compares to Safari in that they are programs that come with the OS so they are optimized to load as fast as possible.

Tlarkin, I'm not sure if this would help, but you can (if you haven't already), switch the Control Panel in Vista to Classic View. My PC at idle uses 1.1 GB of RAM. Can't say I'm dissapointed with the boot times, but everyone is different and have different expectations.

I think if you have over 3gigs of RAM Vista just uses more RAM. I idle at 800M to 1.2G with nothing running, except maybe a torrent client in the background, or sometimes nothing at all.

I don't necessarily have a huge problem with boot time. Although, it does take a while to get everything going (Rocketdock, Sidebar, Dreamscence, etc..) I have been able to speed things up with the Startup Delayer, and prioritize what programs start in what order. I am annoyed with how many 3rd party utility programs I have to use to get Vista to tun how I want it to.

What 3rd Party applications do you have to use to get it running how you want? I've not got any on here, bar the usual like CCleaner, which I had on XP anyway.

Tlarkin, have you enabled all 4 cores on BOOT? I did this and noticed a huge increase in boot time.

Start > msconfig > BOOT tab > Advanced Options > Number of Processors > 4 > Ok > Apply

Well I went ahead and timed some things and monitored my RAM.
Upon Boot:
programs that load on startup:
ObjectDock
Leadtek PVR Scheduler
Trillian
uTorrent
FTP Server Tray Monitor
Zonealarm
Soundcard Utilities

RAM usage once everything is loaded initially = 660MB
Time it took firefox too load as soon as I see the desktop before things are loaded= 4 seconds
RAM usage as I'm typing with firefox open in 1 tab = 655MB
Time it takes for all startup programs to load = about 15 seconds

Gamerman

The fact you have 2gigs of RAM means that Vista will use less of it. Since I have 4 gigs of RAM it will utilize more and cache things out to memory all the time. That is how Vista (and most OSes) so I think that is normal behavior.

I need to tweak Vista for sure. I don't like it out of the box, and I noticed in device manager last night that only 3 of my cores have drivers, which I think is due to a BIOS update I need for my mobo, which the BIOS flasher utility won't run in Vista....

I will investigate this weekend, haven't had much time with the election and work going on.

I just got a new receiver and need to hook up my record player and need to migrate my old PC into a media center, and toss blue tooth on it and get a wireless keyboard and mouse, and rewire everything and get a KVM for my new PC and my G5 that supports USB, audio and DVI....

So yeah, when I get around to it, LOL

lol, i think you either meant increase in boot speed or decrease in boot time. :P

I use CCleaner, Glary Utilities (a great all around tool), Smart Defrag, MemTurbo4 (manages how RAM is used), and Startup Delayer.

I've also been messing around with some Windows Explorer replacements, and programs to increase file movement speeds.

I used to love Vista, but after seeing how much tweaking and work it takes to get it run faster I don't care for it. The only reasons I keep it are for DX10 and that I didn't have to pay for it.
