RAM Upgrade Help

So i have a Dell inspiron E1505 and i have 1GB of RAM (2x512MB). i would like to get 4GB 2x2GB. but i don't know whether to get 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory or 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory. i don't know if my laptop can deal with DDR2 800mhz RAM or if i should get the 667mhz RAM. any ideas?
 
The first place to look is at the manufacturer's specifications to see what is supported for memory. What make and model is the laptop?
 
Dell's support site for finding out information on the original configuration as well as your current situation requires a service tag number as a rule since that's an older model. They do have an online system scanner that will reveal what upgrades are available for that model seen at http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/DellPartsFamily.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs

Other companies like HP make it easier to look up specifications on their products while many complain about "Dellmares"! :P When looking the model number E1505 i come to http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&mfgpid=167679&chassisid=8438 that shows their memory kits available for DDR2 667 SO-DIMM 200pin memory!

When going to shop at newegg or another vendor you first select the laptop catagory while you had selected desktop at the link you posted. A 2gb kit of DDR2 667 by PQI can be seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820141271

"Dell Inspiron E1505" is that what you were looking for?

Anyway, I had difficulty locating the supported amount of RAM, but it appears as though you need 533MHz RAM, such as this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820141241



Its has a 2gb limit.

Yep, I'm so used to looking up desktop parts, good thing you caught it!
 
When shopping that's always one to remember that there's usually a weed down option in order to get into one catagory or another in order to reduce the total number of items as well as the particular type and even price range you are looking for.

Just a quick look at the memory speed as well as memory kits alone being for a laptop shows that the older model you have wouldn't support 4gb. The newer and latest models are the ones that will readily accept the larger 2gb dimms seeing a higher capacity there. Generally however desktops see the larger capacities.
 
I see, yeah, I specifically chose Desktop out of habit. Also, from what I understand you are saying that you can tell by the memory speed how much memory a system that is compatible with that speed will support?
 
When seeing 533 or even older DDR memory you take a look at what the average model will see as a max while some will still vary. It wasn't that long ago 512mb was the max seen portables being compact units to start with.

2gb sized dimms haven't been around that long roughly a year+ amount of time to start with. Yet memory in general has seen a large fall in prices since the economy has been bad in that same period. For DDR2 667-800 memory you saw a leap up from 4-8-16gb and now even 32gb found on desktop model boards. Server boards are a separate matter since server OS tend to support much larger amounts.
