8800gt stock cooling problems??

I just recently purchased a used 8800gt evga graphics card, I am very impressed with the graphics and the speed. However currently the fan is running extremely fast whilst inside of playing any game. I wouldn't have any current problems with this, however it is also extremely loud as well, I am wondering if its possible that the previous owner overclocked the card, or if the stock fan is just exceptionally loud. Also whilst playing the game the texture files had started to artifact and I had possibly believed due to overheating. I am wondering if I should just purchase a new video card or if a Zalman VNF100 Fanless VGA Cooler should help with the current problem that I am having?

Also I apologize as I am new to the newer graphics cards with built in fans so any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
That is basically what I had come to the conclusion it was myself, however I probably need to scrap this computer right now as that was the most expensive part in it. The motherboard is still only for pci-e 1.0 and I was told that it was backwards compatible with my 8800. However I am just wondering could that be a cause of a few problems. Also is there any good pci-e 1.0 cards that you would recommend.

wow i would suggest getting full whack pci-e motherboard. that could be your problem right there, thats like putting a 1.6 litre engine into a truck and trying to push it to go

yeah I really didnt do my research on the motherboard just looked at the price and not the specs and that was a mistake. However I dont want to upgrade the motherboard and then realize that the graphics card was also overclocked and realize I need to throw more money at it. But I guess that may be my best solution right now.
 
unfrotunately all i can say there is welcome to custom pcs , we have all had a scenario like this, its just a case of trial and error and it does involve money all the time but its always worth it
 
download rivatuner and check out the temps, clocks, and fan speed on it. you can adjust both clocks and fan speed. this should fix your problems, and should help you determine whether or not its faulty.

i also have a stock 8800GT, and have had issues overclocking it. only in crysis though. it is fine overclocked in 3DMark06 or every other game i've played. but in crysis it almost invariably crashes when overclocked :(
 
Yeah I currently have evga precision, when i turn down the fan speed while inside of a game the fan is still just as loud no matter what percent it is at. The only time it actually quiets down is when it is idling then I do not have any problems with it.
 
I am currently considering downgrading to an 8600gt XFX as my motherboard only supposed to support PCI Express x16. I really do need to know however if the current graphics card is good and just needs a need fan/cooler. So that way I can just purchase a newer motherboard as well.
 
If anyone could reply with a suggestion on the downgrade to the 8600gt as a pci express 16x card. To fit with my motherboard which is a pci express 16x board or if I should just buy a new motherboard with pci express 2.0 and hope my graphics card isnt ruined so I dont have to buy a new one.

What? He has a PCI-e 1.0 slot, that's perfectly fine. Most cards don't even use the full bandwidth of the 1.0 slot anyway. Having a PCI-e 2.0 card in a PCI-e 1.0 slot is fine, I did it for a few months.

There is nothing wrong with your motherboard, a PCI-e 1.0 slot is fine. With regards to your fan problems, a lot of 8800GT's fans were locked at 100%, I don't know why nVidia did this, possibly because the card is a single slot and needs the higher RPMs to exhaust the air properly. Did you download Rivatuner, that will tell you the temps of the card, that way you'll be able to see if it's over-heating or not.

8600, Don't, just don't. You've got an 8800GT, that's miles better. If you search Google, there's a lot of people that have this problem with their card;

Apparently, it's because the fan's wire that controls the speed has either been cut, or was never there. So, I'm sure buying a new fan will help things. Look at Rivatuner first, before spending any money.

Also, Overclocking cannot be carried over to another computer, through the card, it's all done through the OS.

The thing is that its in the same computer as I bought it from him. What I had a feeling it was is a failed overclocking and he messed it up. Since I have had the artifacting and the fan problems, however while in a game the temperature doesn't move. Just the fan speeds up to a point were its annoyingly loud and unbearable to listen to. I know thats not a normal sound on any graphics card as ive had ones with built in fans before. Thus I have come to the conclusion that I most likely need a new graphics card. I have tried Rivatuner,Ntune,and EVGA precision with all of them I had no luck at all.
 
The fan is stuck on 100%, it's going to be annoyingly loud! When I boot, my GTS' fans are @ 100%, it's one loud mutha 'ucker!

It is normal, many 8800GT's have this problem. Getting a new fan will solve the fan problem.

When you got the computer, did you do a clean install of the OS? If not, the card may still be OC'ed, but this is easy to reset it back to default speeds. You can do it in Rivatuner or EVGA Precision.

I wouldn't want to shell out money on a new card, when I have one that works fine.
 
When I set the speeds in both rivertuner and evga precision it did not change anything at all like I had posted. However I have yet to reinstall windows which I was planning on doing really soon.

Yes. I know. It won't make a difference, if you'd have read what I posted, I stated that the fan didn't have the wire that allowed fan control.

If you think the card is overclocked, then run Rivatuner and set it all back to stock.

Single slot 8800GT fans will drive you crazy, plus they dont cool worth a crap. Like Korn said make sure the cards not overclocked. Plus what kind of P/S are you using?
 
i guess i could be an exception, but my single slot card does fine. temps rarely get into the 80's with it locked on the minimum, and if i let it autoadjust, it always stays in the fiftys or lower.

To me thats (HOT). Thats what I mean, with a after market cooler mine runs 33-34c idle and around 42c under load.
