CPU fan help

Alright so, my friends told me that my CPU fan is too hot and I needed a new one. This was on friday.

So today I went to best buy and tried getting a new Fan. Guy told me I just needed to remove the dust on my fan and Reduce the OverClock on my BIOS.

So I went home and tried to put the fan back on... Epic Fail. The tips of the fans broke right off from my Fan. So... I tried doing what I can to turn on my computer with just 2/4 screws in, and it looked kinda normal. So I turned on the computer and 10 seconds later it shuts off.

The CPU fan is now broken... If its not the CPU fan what could it be? Just out of curiosity on what else could be the problem.

On the note I was using it earlier today and it worked fine. No problems =/

I am posting to make sure, i bought a new Fan from newegg looks really promising and got good reviews. Yes its compatible with my processor.

But now heres another question:

Theres left over thermal paste on the Processor, how do I remove it? I got a new tube of it waiting for me to put it on, but I need to know so that I dont mess it up.

Edit: Ill post pictures in a few.

Not to discredit your friends, but what authority did they have to come to that conclusion? Was it a guess or do they do actual work (and aren't just wannabe's who think they know what they actually don't)?

D's were warm, but incredibly manageable with very little effort. I had a 940 that stayed at a nice cool 33*C under load (freezing for that CPU) using this HSF: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835150083. Do not let the price fool you - you won't be disappointed.

So I turned on the computer and 10 seconds later it shuts off.

Even though it looks find, it shut off due to your CPU overheating and shutting down before serious damage occurred. When a HSF isn't seated properly, there's a super small air gap, but that can be enough to raise temps super high.

Just use some alcohol wipes, or even dip a Q-tip in some cleaning alcohol.

Super easy man..

get a q-tip (or 2) and dip in rubbing alcohol..swap the old paste off and drop a new dab onto the cleaned up chip..

Cripes, it took me like 4 minutes to write my Post and already 4 other responses. CF FTW!

CF is ftw

On friday, they were fixing a computer problem they had and when they saw my CPU fan they put their hand over it and felt the warmth. And yes they can be idiots sometimes ^^

Anyhow though, toss that old, broken junker out...and slap on your new arctic.

Those intel stockers are notoriously shitty.

Thoes are no good CPU coolers eh? I kinda figured but it never bothered me I guess

Well...they are just stock fans. nothing special. I literally have a box of them at work...nobody really keeps them when they build a PC.

You will be better off with your new aftermarket cooler...even if you dont o.c or game much and under 30 bucks is good deal if you ask me!!

doesnt the arctic cooler already come with preapplied thermal paste?

When I got my arctic cooler freezer pro 64 it had some thermal paste on it

My computer info is at my Sig. Will this Fan Cool my processor? The guy at Best buy told me that my Processor's GHz is VERY high for it being a Pentium D

yes it will cool your processor, I have arctic cooler pro and it does the job very nicely.

I used to have orthos temps at 80'c in under 1 minute, and cod4 temps hitting 65'C in 30 minutes

Now it's 70 'C after 10 min (still high but its strain test whatever) and cod4 temps never go above 55'C even after 2 hours of playing.

max temp for 6000+ is 62'C, after that it can crash
