So I want to get a external hard drive for the new laptop I got so it can hold my Itunes and the site were I d.l my music on. To get a idea on my last comp I had over 1000 songs on my Itunes, so I was wondering what is a good External Hard drive to get that will be able to hold the 1000+ songs? Also can the hard drive hold the website I will d.l my music off of?

The whole purpose is so I dont have it on the laptop and make it slower.

WD and Seagate both are good brands to consider there. For most a good 500gb model while some go with a 320gb is a good size while external drives see upto 2tb capacities.

You can't store a web site on any hard drive but the original server. What is stored locally on your drive internal or external is a url file or link in the IE Favorites or links folder which can be copied to a folder on another drive at any time. If you should end up reinstalling Windows you simply double click on each separately to see each web page open and then resave each as a new favorite all over again.

try going with a S-ata External Seagate HDD im running just a internal seagate HDD in a Philips external HDD case and it's great

One to ask here is what price range did you have in mind as well as the form factor? The 2.5" WD models can be looked over at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...description=&Ntk=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=

The Seagate 2.5" nodels are seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...description=&Ntk=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=

As for external enclosures those vary greatly in price from just under $20 upto $60 roughly half the price of a 500gb usb or eSata/usb capable drive. External enclosures are seen for both 2.5" and 3.5" drives.

I have been using Seagate/Mator and WD for years...no problems. I have almost 600gb's of music on my external 750 gb.

The one complaint on sealed external drives not drives in separate enclosures when they started coming out was heat. Yet I can reach over and touch all around the WD MyBook Essential model here and the casing still feels like it at room temps. The one thing to worry about however is dropping one on the floor.

What do you mean?

There were complaints heard that external drives ran hot being closed up in this type of casing and not seeing enough ventilation. The only actual time I could see that however is with some cheap casing made by a 3rd party generic name tossing in any brand drive that lacked any air vents in the casing itself. The warm air would be trapped causing the drive temps to soar.

The odd name brand names seen are just that. They simply bulk order drives from WD, Seagate, Maxtor, Hitachi, or some other manufacturer to stuff into their own brand casing. The advice here however is sticking with a regular brand name for drives to avoid anything else seeing a low quality enclosure.

In fact the WD always seeing room temperature seems like there's nothing inside at all since you expect to feel some heat when touching the enclosure after the system has been running for some time. The external drive stays cool at all times it seems.
