Hi everyone. What is the best free anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware that is out there? I already use ZoneAlarm's free firewall, Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft's Adaware SE, and AVG's free anti-virus. Could I be using better or more software?

The first thing there is to dump Zone Alarm's freebie and go with something that not only removes spywares and adawares better then Ad-Aware and several other programs but places an active guard around the system registry itself. Spyware Terminator will do far more and work well with both Ad-Aware and AVG. http://www.spywareterminator.com/

Spybot S&D sees good reviews so there's no problem keeping that on for additional protection since often one will find what another misses! No one program will do everything and catch everything.

Remove AVG now!! It is said that AVG removes an important system files because it recognizes it as a virus!

I recommend Avast...

On my PC i use comodo free firewall and avast :)

The AVG problem was fixed a long time ago Cohen.

If you're going to dump AVG go with Avira.

Avast is the best free program around. I use it on six machines and and none of them have virus problems.

With anti-virus programs, more is not better - get rid of all of the others and just use Avast.

If you must use more than one program, make sure only one is running in real time.

And the articles seen on AVG have turned out to be nothing but false rumors some were trying to start apparently. With 4 cases running here 3 seeing XP only while this one sees a dual boot with Vista not one has ever seen any problems with AVG on. Plus I ran Avast briefly to compare against AVG some time back. AVG won!

Comodo and Jetico Personal are good for free firewalls while Spyware Terminator eliminates the need for one. That places an active guard aroung the system registry itself prompting even when you go to uninstall something as well as any new being added on.

Comodo Pro + Avast

The best free combination is Comodo Pro + Avast together their official min RAM requirement is only 128MB compared to AVG + Zonealarm which is 384MB!

At the same time as being much lighter on resources they are both stronger as proven by independent testes and by testing it myself using leaktests and the EICAR test viruses.

The free version of Zone Alarm is utterly worthless to begin with and likes memory! AVG isn't a resource hog like Norton and some other antivirus softwares. sorry!

Comodo and Jetico Personal get good reviews each for free firewalls. But essentially Spyware Terminator an effect remover provides an effective guard around the system registry itself removing the need for a firewall to start with.

As far as Avast it falls behind AVG and others there.

Get Avast, as far as I know, it is the only one that boot-scans, which is essential for eliminating the especially hard to get viruses.

Plus it doesn't have annoying popups, and it has live scanners that protect you constantly. I guess it could be a resource hog on an older computer, but on a core 2 duo its great.

AVG sees rootkit protection added into their latest 8.0 build as well as the updated form of Ewido for antispyware protection. The antirootkit tool used to be a totally separate item.

Another thing I found with AVG over others was an instant alert when something got on the drive without even having a scan running. When confronted lately with several copies of an I-Worm type virus AVG prompted for quaranteen or total removal on the spot.

I also use AVG and I have never had a virus on all three of my computers. I think it's a great program for the price. It did have issues and or rumors about it in the past but I am pretty sure that's all taken care of now. These are the operating systems I use with it and never had any issues of any kind.

Ok, I will be downloading Spyware Terminator soon. I currently use Webroot Spysweeper, AVG Anti-virus, ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, Lavasoft's Adaware, and Spybot Search and Destroy. I also use Spyware Blaster.

I am will be downloading Avast later. I am currently downloading Comodo Firewall Pro. I noticed that it comes with an anti-virus program. Is it safe to use more than one anti-virus program at a time?

I am downloading Comodo right now.

I love AVG. However, I will be using Avast in addition to it if it is safe to use more than one anti-virus at a time.

I have also never had a virus on my computer that didn't last more than a few seconds. That is one reason why I like AVG.

Avira is great if you don't mind the popups when it updates. It is far more lightweight on the system than avast.

Also the GUI is hidious on Avast and I find it quite restricting!

Kinda funny you would claim that. Your the one that (started) a thread about the very same thing.

And if you had followed the thread you would have noticed it was updated. After talking to several sources plus having four systems running here 3 XP all through the time frame the alledged updates were have supposedly detected false positives in XP not Vista none were effected. It seems more like someone was trying to start a rumor mill with the pair of articles seen in that one month's time there.

One thing to know Holly02 is that you generally can not run two antivirus programs on the same system at the same time. AVG will require you remove any other program when going to install it.

As far as programs get rid of the free version of Zone Alarm. AVG, Spyware Terminator, Ad-Aware work together well. Spybot S&D will be alright but Spyware Blaster? That can be left out as well as Comodo since ST covers both pretty well.

I did and even posted in the thread that they had already released updates to fix the problem to same day the problem was reported.

Your the one that started the thread telling everybody the world was ending. That one turned out to be a dead end too.
