Turns On By Itself!

Hello.

Has anyone ever encountered their desktop computer turning on by itself?? My computer turned on by itself about 10 minutes after I shut it down. I'm sure I didn't put it on standby or any sleep mode. As a matter of fact, it happened twice. The computer started up again about 20 minutes after the second time I shut it down. Afterward, I did a virus scan and came up nothing. The next time I shut it down, it didn't happen anymore.

What in the world could cause this? Is it more software related or hardware?

I appreciate any input.

Thank you and Happy Holidays.

The power settings in the bios itself will determine that. If you have power on by usb anything and someone walks by the system will simply come to life due to vibrations through the floor. You bump the desk and the lights come on!

I have it enabled here for the keyboard as well as optical trackball instead of always reaching over to the power button on the case which is recessed into a cabinet area. That can easily be disabled in the bios setup.

Haha, thats pretty cool. Im pretty sure I know how... but its been a while so noob question time!

How do you access the BIOS again? xD

And where would I go in the BIOS to enable a keystroke-powerup?

this happened to me before, i had viruses on it so i reformatted and it stopped. Make sure you have no viruses maybe try different antivirus if your using a freeware one

On a custom case most initial post screens will display the Del key has to be pressed in order to enter the bios setup. Right after the keyboard lights flash and the drives are being shown you press the assigned key for that make and model board.

If you are a prebuild then it may be one of the F keys. Whether custom or prebuilt the user manual for the board or model system will tell there. You can also refer to the various sections in the bios in the manual which explains each setting. It's usually an option once you select "user defined" in the power settings area.

Cool feature!

Actually, I have noticed that my optical mouse light stays lit after shutdown. I'll try to access the setup. Oh, and my antivirus is AVG Free. I think it's one of the best free antiviruses out there. The latest version constantly monitors the folders that are most active, like the temp internet files.

Thank you for your help.

The reason for the light remaining on for the mouse is to show there's power present. You see that mainly if the power on by mouse option is enabled in the bios. That would explain right there why the system comes on if some vibration shakes it a little. The mouse is sensitive!

(be careful not to hurt it's feelings! :P)

I believe I've found a pattern to this thing. The computer only turns on by itself if I leave the internet connection disabled in the network connections option of the control panel. I have the DSL cable plugged in constantly with the modem on (doesn't have a power button). The turning off of the connection appears to make the computer respond to incoming data from the DSL moden, which blinks occasionally when the computer's off.

I suppose this is a result of the software design of the motherboard (PowerSpec) or some specific setting I have it on that's allowing it to do this. Well, I just make sure I never turn off the internet connection before turning off the pc--that, or turning the power off on the surge protector.

Thank you all for your input.

Check the bios for the power settings there. If the turn on by network option is enabled that would explain why the modem is triggering the system. You look in the same section you would for power on by PS/2, usb keyboard or mouse.
