Registry problem while installing programs

I'm having issues while installing software.

This has happened many times over the last few months and now I've found this site and hope someone can help, so here is the issue.

Today I was updating BitDefender Anit Virus to version 2009 and all was fine until near the end of the install I received this error:

"Could not write value BDWizReg to Key \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
Verify that you have access to that key or contact
your support personnel."

Now this has been happening every time I try to Install, upgrade or repair a program and it is always the same key
"\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run." Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem.

Whch version of Windows are you running there? XP or Vista? Being this new you can expect the 2009 version to be more Vista orientated if you are running XP. You may be running into a slight compatibility problem where the installation simply failed.

If compatible then the next thing would be seeing the program totally uninstalled before attempting a clean install fresh not an upgrade of old to see if it will then see a complete install and run normally. If something was wrong unseen with the older version the upgrade may have crashed due to that.
 
OS is XP

Well my OS is XP and as I stated the problem happens even with new software and it is always with the same key. I tried to install a fax program it failed, I tried to install Service pack 3 for windows xp and it faild.... same key.

??? I just don't know, I'm thinking corupt registry or maybe remains of virus or malware but no hits on that.

Start a new thread in the security section and ask for Buzz, ceewi1, or SFR there for help with any log you post.

As far as XP I wouldn't even have put up with not being to install anything new without simply wiping the primary to see a fresh copy of Windows go on or at least a repair install after a good sweep with a few tools only after having seen a recent fresh install and not wanting to go through it all over again right away.

You most likely are seeing the result of too many problems in the registy itself where a clean install would clean this up in one stroke rather then trying to figure out if there is or isn't any bug behind this. How long has this copy of Windows been in use?

Thanks PC Eye. Yes, I should, and probably will just take some time and reinstall a fresh OS, but I also use this sys for some business use and the down time and new installation of all my programs is something I am not looking forward to.

I will go ahead and start that new thread. Thanks again.
 
The last option before seeing a full reinstall of XP there would be the repair install method if nothing is found with the log you post on the new thread in the security section mep916 just linked for you. That's an option of seeing all main system files replaced while leaving all programs and folders inplace and won't tie things nowhere as long.

When first upgrading to XP someone pointed me there. It's one of several web articles on how to repair XP and well written. You still will need to see Windows reactivated following the repair however while that will save the present copy of Windows.
