Quad Core vs Dual Core For Gaming

"When games utilize all four cores, the current Quads will be outdated!"

That statement doesn't stand for much at the moment to be honest.

Alright, so there's only maybe three games that use all 4 cores. BUT! With GTA just come out, actually playing piss poor on Duals and semi-decent on Quads, who knows what else is round the corner.

Discuss?

peanuts

see how the next year or so goes see if anything will come along to test them

I would on my limited experience say that the quad is going to be better no matter what but is it worth the cost we are yet to see ...

Yeah, but seeing how the next year goes, there's already GTA which uses all the cores. So, who knows what's next.

Running piss poor on Duals? It looks equal/better than on the 360, and I don't have any lag, hiccups, or anything of the sort.

I went with a Dual because at the time it was best for gaming, opposed to a Quad, and it can overclock like a champ.

Yes, a Quad would be useful for the consumer who would fully utilize it, like a server, or for video editing.

And wont the i7 series bypass the Duals and Quads?

I don't know but on my box of left 4 dead and fallout 3 it clearly states supports multi core processors. I can run those games great and loading time is way fast. I am almost always the first in on a dedicated server when the map changes.

I'm basing this on a thread full of people posting over at OCN. All the people with an E8*** have said they want a Quad, or should have got a Quad.

I'm not trying to start anything, nor am I implying that you made a bad choice. :)

as far as I know dual cores are better than quads for gaming on tests

if you look at some charts on tomshardware you will see that my processor is better than the first 3 phenoms for gaming FPS wise

Even though games run on two cores, Quad cores are still useful because of the other two cores being used for other processes while the game is running.

There's obviously going to be very biased opinions in this thread, but try and look at it on the whole.

I think that Duals are better for the majority of games at the moment, but like Craig said, Quads can do other process in the background. Whilst a Dual can do this also, a Quad would be better at it.

I think that games are going to start to use more and more cores pretty soon. There's no reason why they wouldn't.

I think it will come soon.
The core 17's are quad, the new amd's will be quad.

Well this thread has sparked quite a conundrum. Do you guys think a non-OC Q6600 is still good, or should I pass?

Well, in GTA IV, it takes a 3.5Ghz Dual to pull the same FPS as a 2.4Ghz Quad. However, the Dual does tend to perform slightly better in other games.

I'd take the Quad over a Dual though, there's that slight "future proofing" with it.

Oh, ok thanks. If need be, I can always just overclock it, then save up for another CPU :P. (Well I don't have it just yet, in good time my friend.)

im sorry, but any games that dont play on today's high end hardware (cough..crysis...cough) are the result of poor programming...

/thread

Both a top of the line dual core and bottom end quad core will play any game on the market right now fine (if you have sensible other components) so its really about the future...and the quad is mroe future proof.
