You may want to consider a 2.5" external usb enclosure that comes self contained rather then a micky mouse converter liike the first seen there. You can look over several ide with sata on the same page at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Deals&SubCategory=92&StoreType=2&N=2000090092
When looking at those there simply see what type of interface any model is by looking right under the brand name and model. That would give you some better options since the prices are low.

Someone probably had a bad hair day or some other crap running into one adapter that simply had a loose contact. The idea of a full enclosure however is simply to have a convenient better option since you simply plug that in the usb port rather then a need to open the case up and mounting the drive internally if that is going right back into the laptop afterwards.
Slide in, plug in, and you are ready to go over pulling a side cover off, fastening or unfastening screws, etc. Most laptop users here on the forum will simply go for a closure rather then the hassle since they don't cost much to begin with.

Anyway...
Never heard of anything negative regarding those. They are what I use...they are what I've always used. Dozens of laptop drives hooked up to desktop systems - zero issues. Ever.
Come to think of it, that exact model has made me several hundreds of dollars over the years. Well worth the $5 and shipping, IMO.

An adapter like those were intended for internal use if you plan to keep the 2.5" laptop in use in the desktop for an extended period of time. But for temporary hookup and then back into the laptop an external enclosure is something to consider.
As far as any bad connectors you can run into that on anything including a new power supply seeing a loose contact in one of the plugs. Some assembler simply didn't crimp down well enough on one of the wires. You see that quite a bit on a production line where something isn't noticed while only being a minor item.

You're absolutely right... The one I've had for 3+ years is crap. It can't handle the constant plugging/unplugging. It shorts out HDD's yet I still use it. It's awful and I know nothing.
In actuality, though, you fail again. 20,682 current Posts, so this make Fail number...20,682. Go figure.
For long term use there you also had to go out and buy the adapter kits for seeing 2 1/2" drives mounted internally as well. For simply transferring or backing things off a 2 1/2" and then tossing it back into the portable all that becomes an uncessary set of steps when an enclosure works just as well.
Usb wouldn't be any faster at transfer rates however just far more convenient and easier to use for those on the go more or less.

Yes, but i believe those types are for TEMPORARY use (i.e. just transfer data to desktop HD), right? While, the ones with a circuit board are more for PERMANENT use, AFAIK.
Where is this "EZ-IDE unit" on Newegg? How does it differ from the aforementioned IDE adapters? On second thought, since NT-based OSes (e.g. XP) are pain to install on USB drives, i'm gonna get go for the type that has a circuit board.

Ive used those adapters before and never had issue, a good rule of thumb is if pc_eye tells you something, assume the opposite...
Either or - works find for both. I've had one in my wife's desktop for going on 14 months now, and keep mine for system repairs in my office cabinet. Before I gave it to my wife, the one she has hooked up saw use on a near daily basis and still works perfectly.
