can anyone help me please this is my spec

hp paviliom 532w (TriGem 129504 (Imperial) motherboard)

celeron 1.7 ghz processor
640 mb ddr memory
intel 82845G graphics controller graphics card 64 mb(intergrated) pci
80 gb hd
40 gb hd
250 watt psu

ok i would like to upgrade my graphics card which is a bit limited when it comes to games, i am thinking of upgrading my processor to a northwood p4 2.2. my main question is what graphics card should i get.
oh my graphics card slot is pci not pcie

well if you get a really good GPU, your CPU is gunna bottle neck it, and your PSU wont be able to run it..
furthur more you don't even have an AGP slot let alone a pcie x16 slot, IMO i would start from scratch and build a new computer
That M/B is completely outdated it dosent even have Sata..

ok so it's ols but i want to keep it, and i have it running fast i've seen some year old pc's and this one out runs them easy, anyway all i want to do is give the graphics a bit of a boost i have a spare 300 watt psu any ideas anyone i have been looking at this nivia 6200 256mb pci card what do you think.

don't worry, thats everyone's answer when your machine is 5 years old or so. I still run a p4 2.4ghz, heck, I'm even running win2k.

as far as that card, it seems fairly pricey, depending on brand. $50-75 is what I found, and this is for an aging connection (PCI). sucks that you don't have an AGP, so you are limited. what exactly are you planning on doing with the card? if its hard core gaming, with recent releases, then you will need to upgrade computers, but if its just to increase graphical performance or add an extra screen, you could get away with a 128mb card for 1/2 the price. btw, since you don't have an agp slot, you can get away with using the onboard graphics as well as the pci card for monitors, dual set up even if the card doesn't have it.

if you plan on doing much with the computer, especially if you're talking about upgrading the processor, why not grab some extra RAM. I picked up 2x1gb ddr pc3200 for $25 from newegg not to long ago and really pepped up my p4 machine.

hi, thanks for the reply i was upgrading the graphics so i could playbgames which need shader which the onboard card does not have. i would like to upgrade the processor to a P4 but i think i can only go to 2.2 i have read that you go as far as 2.8 and the memory which is 640 mb i am hoping to go to around 3 gb. if i go for the graphics card that will be around $60, processor around $20 plus the memory around $30 which will a total of around $110 what do you think. this is just ideas at present.

What kind of games are you playing? It's hard to imagine your system having much life left, to be totally honest. You're basically throwing your money into a bottomless pit because no amount is going to bring that system up to par with today's games.

Heck, I'll even donate an Athlon X2 4600 and some DDR2 RAM (either PC2-4200 or 5300) to you if you were going to go for a new build. That's how sad it makes me to see someone trying to keep a system like that alive...

hey, I still use a 1.2ghz celeron as a media computer, even still has IGP for main graphics, works and I'm not going to upgrade until it dies. runs XP btw and mobo only supports up to 512mb RAM. having a virus problem now, but ubuntu still works great on it, now if only I can clean the window viruses.

what I read from the site was your computer supports up to 2.2ghz northwood, which the general consensus even when they were "new" was that it didn't make sense to upgrade from a 1.7ghz to 2.2ghz. the only thing would be you have a celeron processor (according to you) which what I read was, they're slightly slower than the p4's. but another source said the later celerons were closer to p4 speeds. you can pick up a 2.2ghz or even 2.0ghz p4 for $10 or so, check ebay or craigslist. the RAM would be your biggest improvement as you are quadrupling it (practically), but your mobo only supports up to 2gb of RAM, so getting 3 would be useless.

Again, I'll say, don't spend more than $50 on a PCI card, you WILL want to upgrade the system in a year or 2 and that $50 is being wasted on an aging system. as opposed to buying a power supply with 20+4 connector which can be reused in a newer machine. find a used PCI card on ebay, craigslist, or local swap meet, can probably pick up a 128mb or even a 256mb for $25 or so. all in all, you will spend about $50-60 upgrading processor, RAM, and vid card, and that will keep your machine running long enough till next year or 2 when a newer game you're interested in comes out. and then you can build a core2 machine, since it will be considered "older" technology for a lot cheaper than if you were to build one now.

you and me are the people who live 1-2 steps behind in the computer world, but we don't need to be on the cutting edge if the machines are doing what we need them to. Like I said, I'm still on a win2k machine and IGP graphics, I still play WoW, or other games of the like. If I wanted to play a top of the line newer game, I would pay the money, but these older games work just fine for me.

ok smoothjk so your system sounds impressive but i'm not trying to impress. i only play games now and then games like age of empires 3 or dungeon siege nothing like assassin creed i do have a xbox i got second had i just wanted to boast this system up a bit that's all. it runs xp with no problem, i've tweaked it up and it runs better than a friends of mine and him pc is only a year old.

hi guys a friend of mine in england is going to ship me a board he does not use new in box it's a biostar P4M900-M4 what do you think, i downloaded the manual but it does not tell me what max p4 processor it takes i think it will take a 3.2 mhz and the manual also says it will take up too 4 gb of memory but only say ddr2 667 not the speed i think it could be pc2-5300 or pc2-5400 but i'm not sure can anybody help me out here please.
