you can try using tweezers to bend the pin back into place but the damn things are made so cheaply that a lot of times they break when you try to bend it back into place and if that happens you're sol. id start looking for good p4's at decent prices...

do you mean it actully broke off, or it is just bent, bent pins are easy to pix with a steady hand and a tooth pick or something like that

pin broke off completely.... found replacement. 2.66ghhz 512kb l2 cache. matches the chip i broke...

guesing just put the new chip in, then the heat sink, and restart the pc? i dont need to reinstall any hardware or change bios?

make sure that there is new thermal paste between the heatsink and the processor though, because i'm pretty sure that a couple of p4's would make a great george foreman grill

i broke the pin off the cpu when i was trying to straighten.

Well I mean I never had to to do a format or anything adding a new CPU. Unless it was like a X2 to a Phenom.

The chip is the same so worst case you might have to update the drivers but you should be ok.

thanks, its just an intel p4. thinking im swapping chip for same chip.

i was going to upgrade to 2.8ghz from 2.66, but my 2.66 has 512mbL2 cache, and the 2.8 has 1MB l2 cache...didnt know if it matter????

any ideas on where to get thermal paste?

Anywhere. Newegg, Tigerdirect, eBay... Recommend AS5 (Arctic Silver 5) or MX-2.

BTW - Why not put it back in first? If it still works, whoppe :)

got a new chip and installed. pc turns on, disc drive opens, but thats it...nothing else?

if bios battery dead, pc wont start up n act dead? or a igt bad chip? or i got bad socket? any thoughts?
