Motherboard Problems, or GFX card?

I am trying to get SLI to run on a ASUS M3N72-D MOBO, but its not reading my graphics card in the second PCI Express 2.0 slot. Could this be a problem with my motherboard or my graphics card? And do I need "SLI ready" RAM to run SLI?
I have been trying for a few days to get both of my EVGA 9800GTs running, but to no avail.

I'd check each card on it's own, to make sure it's not either of the cards.

You have the SLI Bridge installed, right? Also, both cards have their power cables plugged in?

You have to enable SLI in the nVidia Control Panel.

Oh, and no. You don't need SLI ready RAM to run SLI.

All gfx cables are plugged in, and I have switched the cards in each slots, and both work in the main PCI-E slot, but I can never see both cards in the windows device manager; only the on-board and the 1 9800gt.
And I cannot turn on SLI in the nvidia control panel until the system can read 2 sli ready cards.

So you have the SLI bridge installed, too?
I'm not sure device manager would see both cards, I'll check that out for you on mine tomorrow. Have you got the latest WHQL Drivers, which I think are the 180.48's? Try enabling SLI through them.

Yes, I have the bridge installed that came with the motherboard.
Though it doesn't matter, the system should recognize both cards regardless of the bridge or not.

And like I said, there isn't even an SLI option in the nvidia control panel, because it doesn't read two cards.

I just checked Device Manager and both my cards show up in there. So you're right in saying they should be shown.

I don't really get it, if you're saying both cards work Ok on their own, there's no reason why they shouldn't work when in there together.

What PSU do you have? It may not be enough.

Hmmm. I'd try this;

Un-install all video drivers
Have only one card in the PC
Get the latest nVidia driver: HERE
Install them
Shutdown PC
Put in 2nd Card
Turn on, try enabling in Control Panel.

My only other though is that the PCI-e slot on your board could be faulty, since you said they both work on their own.

Ok.
Is there anyway to disable windows habit of automatically installing drivers?

Erm, you can disable automic updates, which sometimes gets drivers.

Start > Windows Updates > Change Settings > 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them'.

How did the new drivers go?

Ok, I tried it.
When I booted up the first time after the driver intallation, the computer didn't use that driver. It took another restart for the driver to apply. When I shut off the computer and put in the card, on bootup, the resolution reset back to 800x600. When I go to the control panel, there is no SLI option. My computer isn't reading the second 9800GT in device manager either.

In that case, it sounds like the second PCI-e slot is bad. If they both work on their own...

Have you tried just one card in the second PCI-e slot?

Thats what I was thinking in the first place.
But I did have one instance where both cards did read, and I was able to activate SLI. But of course, my computer crashed, and when I restarted one card was read.

I have tried running the card off of the one slot, and to the best of my knowledge, it wasn't read. I will try again when I get back from classes later today.
