Hello I'm a new member hear and recently I rebuilt my computer after it received a nasty virus. I took three doners that were thrown away from neighbors and family. I have install DvD Burner, Second DvD Drive, Card Reader, and my all time favorite floppy drive. I installed Intel P 4, Westeren Digital 160 GB HDD. Rember these are all from trashed computers. The only thing I bought was a cool new fan for the cpu. It is running Windows XP Home

Total Cost : $23.00
Everything was given to me or thrown away including this mother board and HDD and Monitor that works flawlessly

Right now I am typing this from it, I only have one problem. My DVD Drives dont work, I opened both of them three times before until it stopped. Power is still going to it. Lights still flash. I need your help to help me solve this minor problem....

Thank You!

How powerful is your power supply?

On the side of the power supply it said

Max Output Power 300W, (+12V,+5V & 3.3V= 185W Max)

I dont really understand it, but I believe I picked the strongest one i could find, I also dont know how to tell if the computer knows if the DVD drives are there... I'm new to this and this is my first rebuild....

If they are both on the same IDE cable, did you set the jumpers as one master/ one slave?

Yes, I used the same IDE Cable that used on it before, there are no kinks, twist or tears. I also used the same power cord that is running from the master to the slave.

The Master DVD Drive worked on the donor computer and this one I rebuilt but only for three times.

I did some research and I did not set 1 jumper as the master/ one as the slave... I'm still trying to figure that out, any hints?

Plus I have 1 last HDD (Hitachi 80GB) left from the donor computer and I was wondering could I install Linux without damaging the motherboard? A little off topic, I know.

1. I plan to only install the HDD I want Linux on momentarily
2. Once finished I will set the Linux HDD as the slave to my XP HDD
3. I never used Linux before so I just wanted you all opinion, can I do this successfully? Is my power supply strong enough?

***Yes, if anyone want to know my DVD drives still don't work, I tried just plugging in one of them but no luck. I now notice in BIOS my computer does not recognizes either one***

***How can I get BIOS to see my DVD Drives?***

Please Help!!! I'm at the learning curve don't let me fall

Did you change the jumpers as mentioned?

Your drive will look something like this..

you wanna move the jumper pin to MA for master and SL for slave.

In the diagram. you can see the MA is where the jumper is..

Hey thanks, I found some jumpers off an old HDD. Do you know how to get the BIOS to recognize DVD Drives?
