Got a virus but virus checker won't run

Hi all

I think I've got a virus, or some spyware on my PC which makes my computer run like a lame donkey and has been know to direct me to some sites that I'd rather my wife didn't see me visit.

To compound matters I think there's a physical problem on my hard drive. So far I've tried to run AdAware (which found the "problem" and hung), Norton AV and AVG (both run for a few minutes, hit the "problem" and abort). I've tried running scandisk on startup (which hangs seconds after starting up and doesn't even reach 1%), I've tried Windows defrag (which won't even analyse) and I've tried some of the disk utilities on System Mechanic 6 - none will start and all suggest I try using scandisk.

What the hell can I do?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Hi Respital

OK, no problem.

I've run HijackThis and have posted the log it produced.

Unfortunately, I can't install MalwareBytes' AntiMalware. I have downloaded the .exe file, and it just won't run. I have full admin rights on my system and have tried double clicking the file, right-click Open, right-click Run As and it just won't respond. I've even rebooted my PC and it still won't run.

Can anyone help???

Thanks

how about safe mode hitting the F8 key during reboot. then run.
Hi tremmor

Thanks for the suggestion but I've tried that already - they still won't run. Since my last post I've tried a system restore, but they've already been deleted (not by me:mad:). I've also tried to get to the kaspersky online checker but it blocks the site, it won't allow my Av or spyware scanner to update as those sites are blocked.

Finally, first thing this morning I installed Enigma Software's SpyHunter - for some reason I could install this and straigt away it found a rootkit infection. I rebooted and run a full disc integrity check (no errors) and when my system was back up again a full virus check. It seems that the infection had opened the doors to other virus as my system which was clean the Thursday before had seven infections.

These all seem to be cleared out now and thing back to normal. Phew!!:D:D

Hello:

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply i will need:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

OK, I've done as you asked and the logs for HiJackThis and ComboFix are attached.

So far my computer seems to be behaving itself - as at last night the internet was running really slowly, virus checkers / disk scanners / malware scanners wouldn't run or update and certain websites couldn't be accessed. All this seems to be OK now so far.however I would appreciate an expert's eye being cast over these logs just to make sure that nothing sinister is left over.

Thanks for your continued assistance.

Hello, please download and post a log with an updated version of HiJackThis.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
