Slow computer

I have a Dell computer that is now 5 years old. It is a Pentium 4, 266gh that had 512 mb of ram. The computer has always done a good job for us, but was starting to seem very slow loading things. I decided to add some ram I added 2 gigs to my 512mb. I checked and it does recognise that I now have 2.5 gigs of ram, but it still seems slow to load, especially the internet. Any other ideas? I have Mcafee internet security suite, and it seems to be up to date.

Just want to add Mcafee isn't all that great in my experience. I would recommend avast! over it. Avast! is also free once you register for a home account.

That has been puzzeling me, how can Mcafee be so expensive, and others be free? I have always steered away from the free stuff. It makes me wonder why its free, if its as good as the ones you pay for?

honestly, freeware is great. It is the same as all other things, just cause you pay more it doesn't mean it is better. Software in particular follows this rule more than most things. There are great alternatives for pretty much everything.

so you have 2.5 GB of ram - 2 sticks of 1 gb or 1 stick of 2 gb + a 512 mb? or did you replace lol
It's probably going slow because it's not good to mix different ram together your 512 mb stick will always have to catch up with the 1/2 gb stick(s) and thats not good for your system

My computer had 2 256mbs sticks, I added 2 1gig sticks I removed the 256 sticks and put the 1 gig sticks in there place, and the put the old 256 sticks in the empty slots. Its not slow anymore.

Your random access memory is probably running at a data transfer rate of around 2100 megabytes per second. It definitely beats running virtual memory from a hard drive that runs at around 40 to 60 megabytes per second.

keep the 2 gb ram in and take out the 512 mb ram. also, make sure your ram is compatible with your motherboard (look on the manufacturer site of the motherboard for specifications).

You can also try reformating your computer. That always speeds up my computers!

1. - why take out the 512MB???

2. - why reformat!? That's time and a pain!
