Did I get ripped?

The guy at the store where I bought my computer said that the Ultra LSP 650watt PSU wasn't enough power for a Q6600, two 9800 GT's (buying another one in September), and 4Gigs of RAM. Instead he told me to buy an OCZ 700 Watt (I forget what it's called, althought it has a blue fan). It was about $60 more, and I was just wondering if he was telling the truth, or if I got ripped.

EDIT: ULTRA LSP 650: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276573&Sku=ULT-LSP650

i doubt you even really need that 650 watt, i mean look at kornowoski, 2 8800gts's plus a q6600 on a 500 watt

Ouch, I would have stayed with the 650W and saved myself $60. The ULTRA actually has a higher amperage rating on the +12V rail, has the same number of PCI-E conenctors, and only 50W less. He probably told you that because the OCZ PSU says it's SLI-Ready (which is just a gimmick really).

Yeah I pointed that out to him too, but he stated that it only had a high ampere rating on one 12V+ rail, while the other one had 18A on two 12V+ rails, which in the end would be better for SLI. I'm not entirely sure though.

Not really, you actually lose amperage when you combine multiple +12v rails, so the first one would be better for your needs, especially for the price.

God damnit lol. Well, I can't really say I was going to get that exact 650 watt, because they only had the 550, 500, and 450 in stock. Do you think the 700 is still better than the 550? If not, I'll tell my dad to take me to tigerdirect to return it along with the soundcard and the second motherboard that I bought :P. (Don't ask about the motherboard...lol).

As long as it has 30A+ on the 12V rail, the 500 or 450 would be completely fine, even for 9800GT SLI.

the ocz 700w is still very good, many members here including myself use it with very good results. last i checked it had a total of 72A on its 12v rails.

Oh yeah, the OCZ is still a great power supply. It just wasn't worth the $60 price premium.

What about the motherboard? :P

you got "ripped". Did you buy the PSU from the store?

Well first off I think I linked the wrong PSU . The one I have has 18A on 4 12V+ rails, which like lovely? said totals 72A. With the motherboard, I went to buy the Asus P5N-D, but it was out of stock so they gave me a P5N-E. When I went to Canada Computers to buy my RAM they had one in stock, so I bought the RAM and P5N-D and ended up with two motherboards :P. And yes, I did buy the PSU from the store.

Yes that's much better for the extra money.

This is why you shouldn't listen to a sales rep but run back to this forum and post the questions ^-^

They are only interested in increasing the price...not the quality :P

To get the total amps. on the 12V rails you dont just add them together. Thats just the Max amps. any one rail can pull at a time. If its the 700W OCZ your talking about it has 50 Amps. total on the 12V rails.
