Is a 24" overkill for my system

Hello all.

Will a 24" monitor at the native resolution (1920 x 1200 HUGE :O) be too much for my system for gaming?

9600 GT 1gb @ 735 / 2140 / 1815
AMD 6000+ @ 3.3 GHz
2 GB ram DDR2 800 Mhz

I get about 70-80~ FPS in COD4 now. If I'm next to a burning apc it can drop to 45-50. With a new monitor It will be about 50 FPS average which is noticeable and with a burning APC it will drop to under 30 probably which will be very annoying. I can try playing on lower specs.

Opinions?

It may be a little too much if you're playing at the 1920 x 1200. What resolution are you playing at when you're getting 80FPS in CoD4?

You can always lower the res and still have a massive monitor ;)

keep in mind 60fps is the limit, and this is under perfect visual conditions which is never the case playing video games. 40-50 is generally the limit for human eyes, some claiming they can see 50 but do a blind test (change the frame rate by a small number and see if they can identify it as a Drop or Increase) and most people have no clue.

lowering your settings will almost always improve performance. i personally don't bother with frame rates much unless:
1. i'm playing online FPS
2. they're dropping below 30fps

you have some decent hardware, i can't imagine you'd have much of a problem running most stuff on High. the newest games might kick your computers ass at that resolution and quality, but lower the quality slightly should get you within 30-50fps

he can, but usually LCDs only want to run at their native resolution. they get pixelated if you run at anything lower. imo hes better off lowering his quality settings before his resolution.

I play GTA: IV at 1680 x 1050 and it looks fine.

This may sound sudden but I've thought of selling my 9600 GT and getting a 9800gtx+.

I hate playing at resos that aren't native. Looks horrible. Getting a 9800gtx+ would give me more fps than I get now on a 17" ( i play on 1280 x 1024 atm). It would also futureproof me from upcoming games.

Should I make a new thread asking about help for this or should I just post it here?

Well, I think you could get more for your money, something on the ATI side, maybe a HD4850?

I'd make a new thread! ;)

i'm just giving you the general consensus about resolutions, and i happen to agree with it too. if you don't notice the pixelation more power to ya, less frame rates for me... but i don't think i'm being overly picky by saying an LCD not running at it's native resolution DOES look pixelated.

well if you want to follow the rules, i'd probably head over to the Video Cards section. :D
