Should all cores be the same temp?

This is my first multi core system, so I'm still learning.

Basically...should my cores all be the same temp?

I'm showing...

core1 40
core2 40
core3 36
core4 36

Those are pretty much idle temps using real temp 2.7.

I had to take the heatsink off for a few minutes to fix the fan, and a little of the paste got on my finger. Not really much, but now I'm wondering if I should go through the trouble of reapplying, or if my first 2 cores are doing most of the work because they should...

It's an i7 920.

My max temp after maybe 20 minutes of Far Cry 2 are...

Core1 56
Core2 56
Core3 51
Core4 51
 
Thanks for the reply. I had a fear that the heat sink wasn't making good contact or something like that.

I've been searching and I can't find what people are reporting temp wise, per core, for the i7's.

theres not many people who have upgraded to I7 yet because they require a new motherboard,DDR3 ram etc so theyre waiting till prices drop.

theres a few I7 users around here that im sure will temm you their temps ;)
 
interesting that i7 cores run like that, being that they're all one die, would expect more level temperatures, but anyway, those temperatures are fine
 
My core 2 Duo runs like that.

My one core is always 3* less than the other.

When i Play games though, is usually comes close (1* less) or matches...
 
I have always been told if you remove the heatsink, you have to reapply the paste.

On my quad, there is a 8 or 9 degree difference. I believe it is because the cpu or heatsink is not perfectly flat. If you are really concerned about the difference, you could lap the cpu and heatsink.
 
I got curious enough, so I pulled the heatsink again.

I could see a couple less covered spots on the cpu, so I put a little more paste on it, and the heatsink.

Now my temps are...

I just finished playing a couple of hours of Fallout 3 so, I'm happy.
