Bought a PNY 9800gtx+ for dirt...worth upgrading psu?

hey guys,

So i bought a PNY XLR8 9800gtx+ for a grand total of $40 from a friend. Sort of like a belated christmas present that i had to pay for :P

I currently have a 9600gt factory OCed by XFX. My PSU will not currently handle the 9800gtx+. My cpu is a 6000+ x2 stock clocks and i have 2gb of ram. My 9600gt can handle the games i play i right now, so there really wasn't any need for the 9800gtx+ to get into the picture, but hey, it's here right? Is it worth upgrading my PSU? I plan to upgrade my mobo withing a month, so i might SLI the 9800 also. Any recommendations for a good psu? But no newegg guys, sorry :(

I will be buying instore from frys. Most stuff found on their site (http://shop4.frys.com/search?query_...y=p03a&cat=-51724&pType=pDisplay&from=0&to=24) can be found in store so any recommendations for a psu on that page?

What's your current PSU? Also, if you're fine with the 9600GT, there'd be no point in SLi'ing the 9800GTX+'s

IS seasonic a good company? Never heard much about them. has anyone tried this one?

I was eying the corsair one, so i'd be ok with the amps and whatnot? (don't know much about it.)

My current psu is a cooler master extreme 500W

It doesn't have enough pci e connectors so...

Yea, that's true, i'm alright with a 9600gt, but if i can get another 9800gtx for next to nothing again, i will def. SLI it. Just for bragging rights.

Alright, what if price didn't matter? Which PSU do you guys think is the best one? Something that would futureproof me for the next 2-3 years?:D

thnks

Yep go with the Corsair one. Has great amps, and you will be fine with it. But, if I were you i'd go for a PSU that has 1 12v rail w/ like 50a on it.

PNY are ok i would have gone for an XFX or something like that as PNY cards are not that fast

You mean the 8500GT is not that fast?

XFX, PNY, MSI, GIGABYTE, SAPPHIRE, ASUS, EVGA, ERGB, EDVI, EBANANA, X-ORANGE, WATER MELON -X..... same difference.

Mainly, the cooler, small factory OC and price are the only differences. No real difference in "speed" perse

Seasonic is in the ranks of Tagan, Enermax, Corsair ETC.

O, so it's really good quality wise then huh?

I have a xfx 9600gt, and i love the card, but the PNY was only $40 out of my pocket so i went for it.

Let's say i do go for the corsair. If i get the same series and i just buy one with a lot more wattage, would that affect the rails and thingy's?

Thanks for clearing that up :D

Aside from the ones already recommended how about these:

Antec Signature 850W Premium

Corsair 1000W Hi Performance and Energy Efficient

Some SilverStone one

thanks guys:cool:

I would go for SilverStone, they make some of the best PSU's out there. Along with PCPower&Cooling and Corsair

Alright you called it, I'm going for it :D

Thanks everyone

UPDATE:

Read some reviews of the silverstone. Turns out some people are having comp ability issues with their surge protector. Think i'm going to go for the corsair 1000W

Waitttt! Go for the SilverStone DA1000 (1000w) I have it right now. It is very good. Best of all, it has 80a on the 12v rail! That means it has enough juice to Tri-Sli 3 GTX 280's. But still... come with a hefty price of about $249 give or take. I just have it because I won it from a Lan Party I went to like 2 weeks ago.

Thank you pies and Marc.

@Marc:

I looked it up the egg. Looks nice and all, but it isn't available at frys :(

@Pies:

I was eying the 1000W version of that psu. I wanna go big because i never ever want to have my psu has limited or anything.

The first person to call me marc :)

Anyways, yes since the Silverstone is not available at frys, go ahead and go with the 1000w Corsair. You'll be set for a long time.
